For us and now for our kids, there are no good public schools in the parish. Been like that here all the way back to the 1960's.

My daughter and SIL are now paying over $500 a month just for one kid in pre preK. Yes, 3 1/2 years old costing 5K a year. That jumps to over 7K next year for just pre K.

I do with 4 kids. Afford is a choice. Buy used cars and save where we can in other places. Lots of hand me downs.

As has been pointed out here, if someone is in the right school district, public schools are fine. If not, it is unconscionable if a family can afford to do otherwise, and they almost always can afford to do so, at least through Elementary School.

If your kid was seriously sick, would you base the medical therapy decision on the lowest cost to you so you could still have a bass boat and a new pickup? Same principle at work.

If someone thinks private school education is expensive, they should look at the total long-term cost of under-educating a kid. You get one shot with educating your kids, you have to "get there firstest with the mostest".

Our school district is great but I am still going to send my kids to Catholic school because I want them to have a Catholic education.

And right now I am still in school until may and have two in daycare. Daycare alone is the same as private school tuition, let alone adding in college tuition.

My wife and I are middle class maybe upper middle according to the other thread (ot poor) and we do fine. I also drive a $500 dollar vehicle though so my wife can have a nice one and we can have a nice house. All about what you choose to afford.

My wife and I live in prairieville and send three to private school in BR. It's just simply a better school. We work our arse off, but have a big nice house and nice vehicles. As much as I would like a 26' bay boat, it's just not a priority now.

once again, I'm still confused by all the "my child will never go to public school" people on this board

you pay all this money to send your kid to private HS, then they end up going to LSU with all those public HS kids?

seems like a waste of money to me

One would think 100% of the population went to private schools after reading this thread. Everyone's parents were able to sacrifice for private school. No wonder why most of you live on and through the Internet, I feel sorry for those of you with a shitty childhood.

It's still a crap shoot, we have pretty good public schools in Lafayette but were going private anyway.

If I send my kids to private HS (I doubt I will), they better get in a better school than LSU

My parents were middle class and they asked me if I wanted to go to the private school in town and I told them no. My little brother was in private school almost his entire childhood.

I'm middle class and I can afford tuition, but I'd rather live in a parish where public schools are great and I don't have to pay tuition so that's what I did.

True

but you missed the point

You pay all that money to get your kid a so-called better education in private school, but now they are getting the same education as the public HS kids. I have no idea if private school kids do better at LSU. I'm actually willing to bet that the success rate is probably the same.

Again you lose TOPS when attending an out of state school.Sure there are better schools out there, but that's like throwing money away. Several successful people have graduated from LSU and from other smaller colleges in LA.

In fact some of these colleges offer courses specifically targeted for certain industries in LA. I don't think that's a bad thing.

What's wrong with LSU? Great option for a lot of degrees.
