Mortgage is 2k/month. not really high
I would agree with that. Anything under 2k if married and have duel income is not that bad. My wife and I do that and send son to private school in Shreveport. All about priorities and not spending $ on stupid crap like many people do. We make it work and still put cash back at the end of every month and we are no where near OT rich.

So you're saying that a $370,000, 30 year loan at 5% isnt't that high. The OT never disappoints.

I come from a middle class family, and me and my sister went to catholic schools.

You pay all that money to get your kid a so-called better education in private school, but now they are getting the same education as the public HS kids.

I said a $2k/month mortgage isnt that high.
At what point during my post did I stutter?

haha wish public school had that kind of rate. it is less then 20% in LA for everybody much less public school alone. LINK

total people in this state with a degree is barely 30% and that includes those that moved here LINK
public school is prolly around 15%. And before anybody accuses me of bashing public schools, I went to one and graduate in May. Public schools in my area are great but overall still only graduate maybe 20% and half of those are useless degrees.

What's most important to you? That's the question that is answered. If private school for your kids is most important, then of course a middle class family can afford it. If not, then a bigger house, more expensive vehicles, nicer vacation, etc will play more of a role. People usually get in the habit of maxing out what they can afford to spend on homes and vehicles especially, but that also says what's most important to them, does it not? People also blow arse loads of cash on eating out almost every night rather than cooking at home, or on weekends, and reheating during the week. That's also a choice as well.
Agreed. With that said, what could possibly be worth more than your child's education?
Aside from the academic stand point, these are the people that your child will spend most of their days with, who will have a rather large influence on them and the decisions they make, who they will become friends with, have relationships with, etc. Wouldn't a parent want what's best for their child, rather than material things?
For those parents who somehow try to justify in their mind that it's not that big of a difference, I encourage you to spend one day, hell even just an hour, in a public school classroom and a private school classroom/cafeteria/playground/hallway. I guarantee you will be surprised at what you see.

There's no such thing as a useless degree. Just because you are narrow minded and lack the ability to see beyond your field doesn't make you right.
And by the way, I hold a Mathematics degree.

This is really important. Peer influences are important in academic success, and for some schools, there are networking opportunities that are less prevalent in public schools.

Continue to reaccess the evolution of education in La. In the 60's, La public education was damn good (depending on the school of course). By the time my kids reached the school age in the 80's, would not for a moment consider public education. If memory serves, paid about $7500 for a first grader & kindergarten in a middle of the road private school.
Moved to Texas & public ed was superb. Property taxes were through the roof, but ended up on the plus side in a big way. Returned to New Orleans after a 25 year exile in Texas about 2 years ago. I have been pretty impressed with some of the charter schools. IMO, I would look at these before committing to a private school. So glad that is all behind me. Best of luck to all, it's a huge decision for their future & your current lifestyle.
