just put in Maple butcherblocks myself. We live in a log cabin so they fit in. but they are high maint. we would never cut on them. Nothing hot must use a potholder. i put about 15 coats of spar on them as its not bad to leave a ring when you put a cold wet glass on it. but they look awesome.

The previous owners of our home put wood counter tops in our house that are made from a Mokey Pod tree. The guy told me that they cost about as much as granite and that it was tough to cut the hole out for the sink as he burnt up 4 saw blades because it's so hard.
The care of them is pretty easy. Clean them like normal and when they start looking a little rough, you just put some oil on them and it brings the shine and finish back to looking new.
This is a blurry pic but it gives you an idea of what they look like.

Polished concrete looks awesome
I've been wanting to redo my counter tops with granite... I just looked into concrete, never heard of it being done.
I'm in the market.

What about cultured marble? Anyone ever try this for kitchen counter tops? I've heard its a bit cheaper than granite and a decent alternative.

I want to say I paid $52/sq ft for cambria (quartz). I chose it because it does not require sealing.

Easiest way is to save it to Photobucket. Once on Photobucket, you can see the URL link to the picture. Copy and paste URL onto TD.

I wouldn't use it on countertops...too easy to scratch and burn. Venetian marble is a possibe option. Nobody has mentioned quartzite. We are putting it in our new house with a butcherblock island. Quartzite comes in a wide selection of colors and patterns and is a nice alternative to granite.

This is what I have and I'm not sure what it is. It's pretty nice though. No heat or stain issues.

The only problem with concrete, it can have some nasty chemicals in it. Make sure you understand what's in the mix design before you install it.

Did some research. Looks like this is Black Galaxy Granite. 60-90 a square foot installed.

$2000-2500. Granite. Included sink installation and a raised area. Cheaper granite would have cost us $800-$1500 (depending on the granite).
