Possibly, but there should be some sort of manual backup to allow a controlled descent.

If all electronics are out, what would a manual backup allow you to do?

Someone will post something tomorrow about a banker or bitcoin person being on this flight. It is just the PT way. It has to happen.

I cannot imagine the details - but I would think there should be some sort of backup system to cope with a momentary loss of power.

Perhaps they should have some hardened electronics that could survive an EMP.

I am not conversant with this stuff, so I don't want to speculate further.

EMP sounds like a plausible explanation to me.

New terror method tested? Maybe no one would claim responsibility.

Do you remember the Islamist terrorist plot to bring down 11 trans-Pacific flights in the mid 90's? They first tested a bomb on a Philippine Airlines 747. The bomb exploded killing one passenger but the pilots were successful in controlling the aircraft and landing it safely in Japan. The masterminds, Ramzi Yousef and Khalid Sheikh Muhammed, did not claim responsibility because it was a test run for a much larger terrorist attack. This was the begining of what eventually evolved into the 9-11-01 attack.

I fricking hate hearing about airline crashes.

As safe as air travel is, when one goes awry it always unsettles me. Can't imagine being affected by it.

Well he is a pussy but what does it have to do with a plane crash?

Does he mean fly like the engines would still work or does he mean fly like a slow glide into the ocean?

The flight control system for the Boeing 777 airplane is a Fly-By-Wire (FBW) system. The FBW system must meet extremely high levels of functional integrity and availability. The heart of the FBW concept is the use of triple redundancy for all hardware resources: computing system, airplane electrical power, hydraulic power and communication path. The Primary Flight Computer (PFC) is the central computation element of the FBW system. The triple modular redundancy (TMR) concept also applies to the PFC architectural design.

Phantom guys used to joke about F-16 pilots not actually being in control. A Viper pilot only "votes," and if the HAL 9000 agrees it will make the plane do what you request.

Here's a good example of the computer overriding pilot inputs.

They had the throttles firewalled, and were hauling back on the joysticks, but the computer said "NO."

Call me old fashioned, but I like a stick/yoke that's connected to hydraulic valves or cables, not copper wiring.

The best part of the Viper flight controls IMO was if you left go of the stick the FLCC figures you GLOC'd so it would put you into straight and level flight. A guy I know departed flight and finally on his HUD tape you heard him say "let go of the stick stupid" a second or two later, straight and level just as advertised.

As I said, call me old fashioned. I like round dials and would rather be physically in control instead of just going along for the ride.

The Viper wasn't really that bad as far as limiters. But I get what you are saying.
