Anyone here ever been? When does it start and where in Mamou does it take place (all over town?)
Planning to go down and grab some great photos of the chaos!!!
I did search on line, info is not too clear.

I'm talking about the crazy chicken chasing, drunken chaos on Tuesday. I will have my two young daughters with me. I see a video of some of the chaos, there is a lot of kids, so I figure fairly family-friendly atmosphere.

I went with some buddies for a few years straight in high school. They told me I had a hell of a time.

The actual run is Tuesday 7am-about 3ish.
To get good pictures I would park somewhere around hwy13 and hwy104. Get there early. Take some pictures. Play around.
Then find out from the locals about the route so you can travel to the next area. They throw and chase chickens near people's houses.
You will have a good time nearing the end of the ride if you can get to 6th street. Not Main Street that was mentioned earlier.
Riders will be good and drunk by then. Have fun. Be careful

Saturday day and night are big in Mamou. The street dance is Monday night. The night before the run

Is the Monday night street dance fun?

I've heard it's not too family friendly, unless your kids don't care about chickens. One of my friends went last year and she was kind of appalled at the tradition but it is what it is.

I lived in Eunice for a year after Katrina. Mardi Gras in that area compared to NOLA is definitely a different experience.

Mamou is very much adult. The Mardi Gras (the horse riders) are very roudy and drink a lot of beer. The chicken chase can be a little gross when the chickens are caught (they may be ripped apart when "shared" by two or more Mardi Gras. Not sure how you follow this in Mamou. If you would like a calmer more family friendly experience I would suggest the Tee Mamou-Iota Mardi Gras. They do not ride horses but instead all ride in a trailer. They do chase chickens, dance and sing. One good place to view this is Frey Farms at 8:00 AM on Tuesday morning. The Mardi Gras in Iota has bands, food and activities for children. Check out the American Legion Hall of authentic Cajun Music and the children's band stand. The Mardi Gras usually come into town around 3:00 PM.

What about the street dance on Monday night?

Go to the street dance if the weather is good. It's supposed to be chilly but you can have some whiskey to warm up. Should be some good music, food, and dancing

I've run and watched many times and haven't seen this. The Captains don't drink and keep the runners in line. Chickens are usually taken from the runner right away and kept in the Chicken Truck that follows the runners. There will be a lot of drunken dancing, yelling and flipping off of horses. If you want to avoid that, go early. They limit the runners to one beer at a time in the mornings and try to get out of town quickly. This route alternates each year, this year it will be on the west part of town. They usually go to the Hospital and the Nursing Home early on in the run. You can also catch them coming back around The Holiday Bar. The run is usually 7-3. While they are in town there will be a street dance. The dance ends shortly after the runners return.
There are bands and street dances all weekend. Monday night is the big one and it usually starts up in the afternoon and ends around 10. Cajun music under the Red light and DJ's at other locations for the younger crowd.
