About 15% of metro Birmingham lives in Birmingham. The yuppie crowd lives just over the mountain in Homewood or Mountain Brook.

I lived in Birmingham for 3 years and really liked it. Pretty good hiking and mountain bike trails. There are lots of good roads to just go for drives. Airport has pretty good flight options and the city is located where you can take some nice weekend road trips.

It really is becoming a hidden gem. You get all the advantages of living in the mountains with an excellent park and trail system, plus only a couple hour drive to Atlanta and Nashville when you want something different.

Bham ain't bad. But if your not from Bham your in for an uphill climb in a lot of respects.

I doubt this is the case since he is heading there for work.

Birmingham is great! There are localy owned hidden gems everywhere. Local bands are awsome. And locations to see them are everywhere. Birmingham has everything for everyone within a 30 minute drive from downtown!

I'm a life-long Birmingham resident, currently living in Downtown Birmingham. The city proper has very few neighborhoods that you'd want to live in, but most of the suburbs south of town are very nice, and some to the north and east are OK. Mountain Brook is VERY nice, with Vestavia, Homewood, Trussville, and Hoover all being good choices. Downtown is enjoying a resurgence and pretty cool with Barons (AA) baseball, breweries, and cool resturants...and if you enjoy motorcycles and Indy races the Barber Motorsport Park and Museum are must-sees!

I moved here in 09. It was tough at first, but it has grown on me. I live in Southside just off downtown and I like it, nothing is really too far and crime is essentially non-existent. The downtown has gone through a revival lately, and there are a good bit of decent places to eat/go out.

Not a bad place. He could do ok there if he wants to work ad start a life. I read the negative stuff here and laughed. Most of it was wrong.

I've had two houses in Crestwood...it's nice affordable area in the 200K range that's minutes from downtown, UAB, and the Medical Centers...the only drawback to actually living in the city is that the public schools are TERRIBLE.

The Birmingham suburbs are great places to raise a family. I am pretty sure it wouldn't be too cool for a single person who likes to party though. There are some good spots, but overall it could be a bit boring.

The MILFs in Mountain Brook, Vestavia and Hoover are mind-blowingly hot though. If I were single, I would hang out at Target,Whole Foods or Publix instead of at the club.

I feel like they are not as bad as made out to be and that they are improving. In comparison to Mountain Brook, Homewood and Vestavia, the Birmingham City schools leave a lot to be desired, but I wouldn't classify them as terrible. I am a complete and total hypocrite though, because my son is in private school.

I've only read the first page, but it's amazing how many people chime in on something (like this topic) when it is abundantly clear they have no idea what they're talking about.

I've lived on both coasts and recently moved to the south 2 years ago. I've been to Birmingham a dozen times and (at least the parts where I went) it was a lot nicer than I expected. A lot of the roads seemed descent, lots of trees in the surrounding area, relatively clean, lots of good neighborhoods. I mean, it is the south and it's the US, so it's not a really a city, but I'd rather live there than a lot of other places, including Nashville (where I'm currently at).

Interesting. What part of Nashville? There are some really nice areas there as well.

It's a good place to live, with nothing too notable to make it a great place to live. You can certainly build a nice life there.

Perhaps I overstated.... There are some decent schools within the city limits, but Bimingham does have 11 schools who are currently (2013) listed as "failing", in that they've scored in the bottom 6 percent of state standardized tests in reading and math for three or more times during the last six years.

The bar is set pretty low, when you could be in the 7th percentile and be OK...

B'ham area is nice. Hoover is great, along with Vestavia, Mtn Brook. Others have mentioned some good areas, also. I will agree that it will probably be better than any similar size city in the Mid West.

Only someone from Alabama would use the words Birmingham, AL and hidden gem in the same sentence.

I've been there several times for work. As someone else posted, there are tons of chain restaurants and Baptist churches, and nothing really remarkable about the city. Crime is pretty bad too from what I recall.

Yeah, and I'm sure there are no Chili's and baptist churches in Louisiana

Don't be a dumbass. The "chain restaurant" angle is so fricking stupid..there are chain restaurants in every major city in America. That's why they're, ya know...chain restaurants.

I lived in Bham the last 2.5 years before moving back to GA recently. While I wasn't in love with it, it definitely didnt' suck. It had a lot of positive, redeeming qualities. Anyone saying that birmingham is a shithole or it sucks is simply talking out of their arse.

Chick-Fil-A across the street from the Galleria was a MILF hot spot years ago.

Lots of ignorant posts and hatred of all things Bama in here. B'ham has great bars, breweries, and several of the best restaurants in the South. Shits all over 90% of Luziana.
