Not a big revolver fan but I'm looking around.

What is your price range? Are you looking for something currently produced? Double action or single action?
This is the best .357DA ever made:
And the best .357SA:
Neither one of these guns is in production BTW...

I want a S&W revolver bad
Ruger had some awesome ones too
You looking for a full size one or a carry one?
Single action/double action?

Would have been S&W for a long time.
I favor Ruger models, mainly, these days, whether a GP100, SP101 or a LCR.

Ive only let a few things touch my big arse,, but a Ruger LCR does it at least 4-5 days a week.

Find a pre lock S&W Model 66 2.5". I have 66-4 and it's one of the best .357 ever made. It's incredibly accurate for a short barrel gun and it conceals nicely in tge right holster.

Check out a Ruger GP100 4". I am a big fan of Ruger revolvers--they are virtually indestructable.

Smith and Wesson is king of revolvers IMO. That said i have had great service out of my Rossi .357 with 6 inch barrel. Also considerably cheaper than S&W.

If you go with 357 you can shoot any 38 load in it plus 357 loads.

I've been curious about Dan Wesson's, but I haven't got my hands on one to shoot.
Also, I'd look at at least a 4" bbl - prefer 5"-6". Snub-nosed .357 doesn't make much sense to me.

For under $1000 the only ones I'd look at would be Ruger GP100 and Smith 66 or 686.
If you're going to shoot alot (and I mean a whole lot) of thermonuclear magnum stuff, a ruger is better. The general consensus is that they're tougher, and even if they aren't you don't loose as much blowing up a ruger as a smith.
If you're going to use it like a regular person, the line gets more blurry and it depends on what you like. The best way to compare it is a ruger is a corvette Z06 where a smith is a ferrari. They'll both do the same thing, but one does it with much more style.
Rugers tend to be big and clunky and heavy. They soak up recoil very well and tend to shoot well. Smiths are much more refined. The model 66 is a K frame which is a sweet arse small, light incredible little gun. It also can't handle a steady diet of 125gr full house magnum loads. Police departments had to get away from the K frame smiths because the hot 125gr loads were cutting and stretching the frames. They were also shooting a hundred rounds every couple days, so take that FWIW. The smith 686 is a larger framed gun and can handle the heat better than the k frame. Also a sweet arse gun that can be had in a 6 or 7 shooter.
In a nutshell
For durability, Ruger GP100 or SP101 (whichever you prefer)
For refinement and durability, Smith 686
For a dead sexy fine arse piece of shooting iron that you'll probably get pissed at people for putting fingerprints on,
