During a "spirit week" where juniors choose a different theme for each day.

quote:

They suggested "'Merica Day," but administrators, she said, thought it could be offensive to the school's international students.

So on one side you have the Coke haters because America's supposed to be white and English-speaking.

Then on the other side you have these administrators that think non-whites are not American. I think these guys are trying to outsmart themselves.

WE'RE ALL AMERICAN!

"My Country Monday," which they believed would allow students to celebrate any country they chose.

Finally, a day to remember Nazi Germany in our schools.

In all seriousness, wouldn't that make an impression: a student in Nazi garb being sent home on the same day that Merica Monday was banned.

This seems like something that well adjusted people would freak out about.

My kids school had "Hug an Asian Day". I don't think it was official just the kids doing it on their own. The non-Asian kids thought it was funny and the Asian kids enjoyed the hugs.

They should have banned it for wanting to call it 'Merica Day" instead of America Day.

That, and I'll wait to hear what the admins have to say...but if what's reported is true it's absurd.

I served 8 years in the army, mostly as a light infantry medic. I considered myself as patriotic as one can be. That being said, I sometimes feel embarrassed to call myself an American, we've become such a cowardly country.

Senior Stephanie Livingston thought the school's decision was hypocritical, given that students celebrate the Mexican culture holiday Cinco de Mayo. She also believed prohibition of "'Merica Monday" was an affront to students and their family members who have served in the Armed Forces.
