I am between the merkur 38hd or the EJ DE 89lbl. I'm looking into the 180 also. Not sure which direction I want to go. Trying to figure out the pros and cons of each different brand/model.

It doesn't make that big of a difference. The merkur HD and the EJ DE89 are both excellent safety razors that you can't go wrong with. Its all about the blade.Derby is the dullest blade and I would start with that. Then you can move it the sharpness scale up to feather blades. I personally use personna blades (crystal). The blades have a medium sharpness to them.

I went 38hd over 180 because it was heavier and something in my mind said 'that means it's probably better built/will last longer.' It likely isn't true. If I could go back, I would start with this one.
Anyone use a synthetic brush?

I got a 180 for Christmas and love it. Nice weight to it and for a first time user it feels like I have a lot of control.
