Turned a horrible Panthers team into a Super Bowl contender 2 years later. Losing by 3 to the Pats cheer he is a decade later with the greatest passing offense in NFL history, coaching his second Super Bowl team and people don't list him as a great coach, what sense does that make.

On the radio today I hear Payton compared to Bill Walsh and Fox called mediocre. What?!

What he did with the Panthers was extremely impressive. Just 1 of those things where the coach was there so long that it got kind of stale. Like Reid with the Eagles and Fisher with the Titans. All are great coaches, but they kind of ran their course with those teams.

But, Fox is a defensive minded coach. They are in the bottom half of the league in defensive stats and in ppg given up.

The reason the Broncos are where they are at isnt because of Fox and that D. Its because of that offense and Manning. And I doubt he does anything with the offense. I mean when he wasnt coaching due to his health, the team was the exact same as it was with him.

You could put just about any 1 of the 32 head coaches, 32 OCs, and 32 DCs in the entire NFL as the head coach of the Broncos and they would most likely still be here. Manning could very well go down as the smartest QB ever to play in the NFL and the offense is just ridiculously talented. And Fox didnt really have much to do with that.

But Fox did draft Vonn Miller, no brainer, but also drafted Julius Thomas and Virgil Geen in the 2011 draft. In the 2012 draft he drafted Derek Wolfe and Danny Trevathan, 6th rounder.

But what the Broncos did this year doesnt have that much to do with John Fox. That said, I still would call him a very good / potentially great coach. Hes def not a "mediocre" coach.

He's a great coach. As a saints fan I was glad to see him leave the panthers.

Being one of the most conservative coaches in the league (the most?) doesnt help your perception around the league and neither does winning with Peyton Manning at QB

Thats just how it is

Fox and Coughlin are two of the most underrated/disrespected head coaches I've ever seen.

You have to face the facts, no coach, other than Dungy, is going to get credit for a manning quarterbacked team. Fox got ill and Broncos don't even miss a beat on offense. What he did with Tebow was extraordinary and a lot of luck, but if they win Sunday they'll crown manning the reason why.

For the record when the Saints hired Sean Payton it was Fox who said Payton had 'the x-factor'.

I'm not sure what that contributed to the thread I just wanted to say that.

Back to John Fox, if I may. He lost any perception I had of him as a great coach when he hamstrung Peyton last year, particularly at the end of the Ravens playoff game when he had him just try to do nothing but run the ball, even on 3rd and 6 with over one minute left. He seems to have learned big time from that lesson and has gone for it on 4th down more often and also allowed Peyton to throw to run out the clock, such as seen at the end of the last two playoff games. He is improving in my perception of him.

I always called him Les Miles 2.0 for doing well with everything outside of the actual games but being a terrible in-game decision maker. I am still not convinced he is a great coach, but I am not of the opinion that he is above average.
