What items have you guys bought ahead of time on the internet to either save money or improve quality on the interior of your home?
Any other tips you can offer up for a person fixing to sub out his own home?

Start paying your retainer to your divorce lawyer. Two leading causes of divoce:
1. New tits; and
2. Building a house

Appliances.
AJ Madison (not Ashley Madison - that will cost you more) or US Appliances.
You're welcome.

Join direct buy...
If you are building a house it's worth it.

What exactly is direct buy?

When we subbed out our build we bought all of the hardware online. Cabinet hinges and knobs, door locks, door stops(both on hinges and on baseboards). We also bought all of our bathroom stuff (toilet paper holder to towel bars and rings). Saved a good bit over local folks.
1)The biggest problem we had was with the bank. they had certain things they wanted finished before you could get a draw. We only got 4 draws. It made it tough. See if you can get 5 or 6. Will make your life a whole lot easier.
2)Never pay before the work is done. I did a few week by week payments with subs but never any deposits.
3)whatever you plan time wise add a month to it. You are 1 job for many of your subs. Odds are you're not giving repeat business to them. They will put you off for other contractors that give them a lot of work. Its just going to happen.
Good luck I did it and am still happily married with the exact house I want, for $30,000 less than I could have paid someone else to do it.

You need an intercom system, I don't understand how people still get by without them.

work the appliances! you can get some really nice high-end stuff if you shop. don't over look used or floor models either. a lot of times there is still plenty of warranty left. however, clear this with hvac/electrical/plumber and cabinet s/c first.
side question: where are you building at?

Build.com - for lighting, plumbing fixtures and a few other items
hometheaterdirect - if you do want intercom. The intercom comes with a free whole home audio system.
NO COAX check out some of the HDMI matrixes on hdtvsupply.
Depending on what kind of int doors you are looking for doorclearancecenter. Located in houston. For $200 in gas, and $138 uhaul trailer rental I saved $12000 on interior doors.
All told, I'm at about $105k in savings. Almost complete.

What do you mean No coax? Doesn't direct tv require a coax connection?

Ok. There is one (1) coax run in my house. From outside to the media closet. From there, everything passes through an 8x8 (8 in 8 out) Matrix, then through CAT6e cable and converted to HDMI at the TV.
ETA: all receivers(only need 4) are in a central media closet, along with xBoxOne and 360 and MS home media server.
With the matrix you can acces any source from any one or more tvs in the house.

We finished building about a year ago... subbed everything myself and did a good bit of the work as well. Everything went well... hardest part was having to buy EVERYTHING and make sure it's on site on time. Windows and doors have a pretty good lead time so make sure you have those and the carpenter isn't waiting on 'em! Scheduling wasn't too bad, but I had to finish plumbing trim out myself because my plumber couldn't get back when I needed him to.
Bank was cool.
Subs were cool, except the painter. frick that guy.
Also, buy everything you can with a credit card with points... we got a couple of ski trips out of it at the end.

I'll cut you a good deal on a toilet and rolloff dumpster.

I'm looking to set up a media hub in my next house. But I thought each box had to have coax. Can you provide a link on doing a media hub and setting this all up. TIA

I have Dish Network Hopper and it requires a coax to every box. Don't know about DirectTV.
