In south LA does having a carpet floor on boat( I know the technology in outdoor carpet has increased dramatically) or is this a deal killer with all the rain, precip., mold, rotting, etc.
Should I go for a hard ( Vynel) floor and play it safe?

Replies much appreciated-- about to pull trigger...

I'd stay away from carpet if buying new, which it sounds like you are. That's just me though.

Keep in mind this was 10yrs ago in Mobile...my friend had the green outdoor carpet(granted he kept it in a garage) but each spring we would scrub and wash the carpet. It stayed pristine for as long as he kept the boat. Used to take many trips to Sand Island off of Dauphin Island. It allows moisture to evaporate easier, no slippage.

My brother in law has carpet. It's made for outdoor use.

Keep in mind that it is plastic fibers and is basically rot-proof.
After five years it has held up fine with simple pressure washing now and then.

My cousin has a pontoon boat without carpet. The flooring is textured and we've never had issues with slipping. I don't know how that would translate to children slipping, but drunk adults don't seem to have a problem. I think it makes it 10x easier to clean as well. It sounds like some people like the carpet, so I guess it's a matter of opinion. But I'd go without carpet if I was buying.

If you ever fish in icy (slippery) conditions, you'll be glad you have carpet.
