I've responded to a bunch of those threads. Sometimes I hesitate because it may sound like I'm bragging but I'm just trying to help by sharing my experience. Can't really help it that I'm so awesome.

I've traveled more than most of this board combined. But don't ask me for any advice because I was too fricked up to remember any of it.

I want the hole-in-the-wall dives only a local would know about.
There are dozens of forums that deal with this.

It's especially true in the "What to do in Vegas" threads. That thread happens like 3-4 times a week!

Same here. TD is like one-stop shopping for all your internet needs.

I met people like you when I was in Jakarta. So judgemental, so close-minded. Such a shame. I was there for business, of course.
It's like my Tanzanian friend Toolu said to me as we were riding elephants across the Serengeti just before dusk, he said "Bluefin, the lion eats the gazelle, but the gazelle has no hate."
Maybe you should be more like the gazelle. I know a great spa in Madrid that could help you with that.

Are you Paige's alter trying to bait people to white knight for you?
I've noticed you mention her like 3 times just today and I'm not even looking for it.

quote:98% of threads on the OT are attention whoreing.
my first identification of the "Food Board Attention Whoring" years ago resulted in many a ruffled feather other there. My basic premise was F&D'ers who start threads with pictures of what they were cooking had nothing to do with sharing food knowledge, they just wanted the ego stroke from other posters telling them how masterful each of them was in the kitchen, basically fishing for compliments.
they didnt care for that
but now, what I'm seeing more and more of is:
"What should I do in City XYZ ???"
in this day and age, why, of all places would anyone come to TD to get travel advice? They wouldnt. There are about a 1000 other websites that I'm sure are more suited to make recommendations on what to do on vacation.
my suspicion is that posters want to brag about where they are traveling to, and want some form of ego-stroke as they feel very proud of themselves and their place in life, and they want others to know.
Yea or Nay? "Anyone ever been to _______" threads really are more attention whoring than actually sourcing out useable information?

exactly
If I'm going somewhere I have never been, I'll post a thread on the F&D board before I do any research. I've been here long enough to know which posters I can trust with their recs.
I can't do that with some random blog.

Like others have said, maybe they are looking for things only locals would know about and want to avoid the touristy stuff. If you google "what to do in xyz" all you get is the tourist stuff.

I was just trying to find a good bar in iceland to have a beer, frick.

I hate to admit it, but I think the majority of the OT and myself are of like mind. Therefore, I rather ask someone on this board for travel advice then to search the internet for opinions from people that I don't even know. Sorry that you don't get out much.

Madrid? How quaint. The Spas of Istanbul are far superior as any serious world traveler can tell you.
