Both are old cities with Southern charm located on the coast. Which city is better? Explain yo self.

I'm a native New Orleanian who often vacations in Charleston.

I don't think one is better than the other because they both offer unique things.

Yea, New Orleans isn't located on the coast at all. You could live in Bay St Louis and drive the hour to the city everyday, down Hwy 90 is a beautiful drive as well. It makes it tough though since most of what NOLA is about is the night, so you'd miss out on that. If you made enough you could rent an apartment in the city then live your southern coastal charm in BSL.

Charleston, all day long (and I love New Orleans). It's like the cleaner version of New Orleans.

Charleston easily. Both are great places to visit, but Charleston is the much more livable city.

Charleston is more southern than Caribbean. New Orleans is more Caribbean than southern. Both have aspects of the other. Charleston grew out of British colonialism and their east coast/Caribbean empire. New Orleans grew out of French and Spanish colonialism and their involvement in the Caribbean. As the country expanded westward, New Orleans became more cosmopolitan.

I love to visit New Orleans, but prefer Charleston. Food is great in both places, architecture equally interesting, but infastructure, cleanliness and safety are much better in Charleston...Charleston is a city I'd enjoy living in...New Orleans wouldn't even be a consideration.

In Charleston, women outnumber the men and they have a beach.

I live in new orleans, and am currently sitting in an apartment on King street in Charleston, this city is amazing, truly amazing, beautiful, the food here is great, lots of good sights, you can walk Everywhere.

i feel much safer in Charleston, but Nola is home to me... both are awesome

If anyone can give a serious response on Charleston I'd be interested. I love nola but I'm thinking it might be time to get away. Some reasons I thought about them are:

1) They're still in the south
2) Vote close to the same (aka I can keep my guns)
3) Have a local population that won't allow their beliefs and laws to change on a whim

I know the partying won't be the same but I'm at a point in my life I'm past that. I'm a BS Computer Engineer (10 years exp) if that helps about jobs. Thanks.

Love Charleston. Would be bored to death if I lived there, though.

No JF, FQF, Mardi Gras, Saints etc etc...F that.

I like Charleston better, but NOLA has more of many things Charleston has.

Both have good food, NOLA has more.

Both have interesting bars/shopping, NOLA has more.

Both have great culture, NOLA arguably has more variety.

That said, Charleston has nicer walkable areas, nicer coastal areas, and better people IMO.

But, I wouldn't live in Charleston permanently unless I was loaded or native. Like NOLA, it can be very aristocratic, but unlike NOLA, there aren't a lot of pockets for outsiders to get into. You can live in Charleston and enjoy it, but you're unlikely to become anything of note in that community.

Anyway, they're both fun, but Charleston's overall charm compared to the sometimes brash and over the top nature of NOLA gives Charleston the edge if you're past your mid 20s.

Food? Significant edge to New Orleans which is one of, if not the best food city on Earth.

Safety? Charleston.

Things to do/see - about equal.

I could see myself living in Charleston more easily than in New Orleans - however, to visit - New Orleans has the edge - food and WWII Museum being the deciding factors there.

My mom had the best explination: Charleston is a southern lady and New Orleans is a southern whore. You love them each seperately for what they are.
