I know it's been discussed, but can you link me to a detailed discussion? I'm not terribly familiar, beyond knowing it's a reload card.

ETA: Shame about the Bold being discontinued. Then again, I was planning on dropping it when I got the Ink Plus anyway, so I suppose it's not the end of the world.

And wouldn't you know Target and Amex have released yet another Bluebird/Serve type card called Redcard prepaid, not to be confused with redcard credit or redcard debit.

Can only have 1 of the 3 but some may prefer Target loading over Walmart loading

Yeah I was reading about that.

I don't think there is any value in that product for me over serve.

I'm hoping the rumors about Facebook coming out with a P2P payment plan that allows for CC transactions are true.
Stupid amazon. They aren't in the for profit business anyways. Why not just keep it going?

80 pages is a lot to thumb through. Forgive the questions.

I have been a credit card hater for a long time. Primarily because I almost got myself into a tight situation when I was younger. Thankfully my wife is more responsible than me and saved the day. Hence our tight budgeting I've alluded to in other threads.
Fast forward six years later and we are in great situations in our lives. We have family stretched all across the U.S. from San Fran, to GA, and other various places like S. Car., MT, FL, or Carmel. I feel like I'm not making my money work for me. We primarily fly Delta and Southwest. We are planning a trip to Barcelona & Paris this summer. That flight will likely be Delta based on what I've been researching.
I scoped out a few sites like Points Guy and Nerd Wallet. Most keep pointing back to thenChase Sapphire Preferred. 40k + 5k for adding wife + I assume the $3k in what it takes to qualify. I like that you earn double points on travel. I do that quite a bit during cycling season. Wife and I only eat out once a month, but we usually go big. Almost OT big.
Would you guys suggest looking anywhere else like Amex? I'd like to keep annual fees low.

If you are loyal to Delta I stand by both the regular Amex and Delta branded Amex as giving you the most value. The DL Gold Amex will give you 50,000 miles (I think this is still the current offer) at no fee for the first year. The Amex PRG gives 3x points for travel and it should have a similar introductory offer (50,000 points or maybe more), first year is typically waived. These two cards alone would get you close to 100K points/miles without paying a fee the first year.

Looks like the Gold PRG gives 25k for $2k and the Gold Delta Amex gives 30k for $1k. I'm not 100% committed to Delta. Just seems to be the airline I end up on when not on Southwest. Now that I think about it, last two flights to Mexico this year were United.

You can get better offers than both of those.

I believe most people use their Chase points with United.

I only fly Delta and my Amex Platinum/Amex DL gold have really offered me some nice bonuses/perks.

Try this Link

If that doesn't work

If you get a Delta card get the platinum... You'll get a companion voucher each year upon renewal.

Delta's reward program is not one you want to voluntarily tie yourself to. Don't get a Delta branded card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a good card, but I'd wait till they bump the offer back up to 50k points.

I'd recommend the Chase Ink Plus right now at the 70k points for $95 annual fee. It's a good card for having as a joint card to pay for bills between you and your wife. It is a business card, but you don't need an EIN and can use your SSN with the intention of starting a business.

FYI: It has a 5k spend to get signup bonus.

Just wanted to get some advice on burning a card.

I have a Delta Gold AMEX and the fee kicks in at the end of this billing cycle. I don't use it much anymore and my company has me travel through American now. Should I burn that Delta Gold or is there a version to downgrade to? If so, what's the credit score effect of doing so?

If you have other lines of revolving credit, just cancel it. I got my wife the card for the 50k signup bonus and figured out quickly why the credit card bloggers aren't fond of delta. Unless you fly delta often, it's not a good card for points.

The impact on your credit is negligible for somebody with an average to strong credit.

Have you started booking your SE Asia trip yet?

As you know, I'm looking at Cambodia/Thailand for December 2015 but I'm getting worried award availability using Star Alliance only may be risky due to high season and not as much date flexibility as I'd like.

If I'm reading this right, American is 35k in economy and 55k in business one way on oneworld partners? Thinking I should load up on them in the next couple months to have some flexibility. I think I have the idea down on finding Cathay Pacific availability using British Airways but I'm just looking for support here.

Regardless if I use one whole airline for booking or not, I'm thinking that instead of waiting for the whole trip to be bookable, that I will book one way MSY -> REP and then wait 2 weeks and book one way HKT/BKK -> MSY so that I guarantee each leg as it opens. Booking REP to BKK and BKK to HKT separately.

Thoughts on that?

ETA: If it matters, my point balances:
United: 125,891
Chase: 140,123
Starwood: 36,650 (building these up)
US Airways: Should have 50k any day now
American: Big fat 0 right now

I'm booked on United flights to NRT with a layover at IAH and Thai air to BKK all in coach(not thrilled about that, but actually watching for upgrade potential). I don't think I would worry about it. They seemed to have a lot of availability one year out if you had flexibility. Thai & Eva air offer pretty good biz class availability from what I've seen and those are both real good products.

Yep. It's a pain to find award space for free from my experience. BA was the way I was using. I think I read you can search JAL as well. Next year I'm going to load up on AA points(US Air) so I can do a Cathay Pacific first class(or biz) to HKG in 2016. Hard to beat 50/62.5k. Nice part about booking through AA is that award changes are free. I changed my last award itinerary 4 times .

If you book separately, you won't be able to book your stopovers, correct? I honestly don't think you'll have an issue with 1 year to watch. I pulled up my itinerary daily for a few months and was almost always able to find biz seating that fit my schedule. I've actually changed it three times, once I had to call(was very nice and played dumb, "there used to be no fee, when did that change?"), and the other two times I could do it online free.

Get the other one of y'all one and both of y'all get the Citi Plat Biz card(since it's churnable and personal isn't), and you've got 2 more Biz RT options to Asia just in case.

Decided on Phuket?

Are you using points for hotel stays anywhere?

Thanks for the reply.

I actually want to do Ko Yao Noi or Railay. Flying to HKT is just a necessary extension of my first choice.

Not too concerned with stopovers as I don't have time for one/the directions/days visiting certain places isn't really allowing for it. Lay of the land problems basically. I suppose I'll add a free one way to DC (her family) or something to get use of it

Planning on using Starwood for Siem Reap (Le Meredian) and Bangkok (Royal Orchid for location) and will probably use cash for beach portion.

Your post made me feel better. I'll probably still be looking to get some point flexibility and in addition to your suggestions I need to get my fiancée her own SPG since those can be shared rather easily.

Figured booking is in February so I better get kinks worked out now

Yeah I wouldn't stress it. There's so many options for getting to Asia.

In so many parts in Asia, it's almost a waste to use points due to how inexpensive lodging is. For 10 nights only place I'm using points is Tokyo. Hotel pricing like NYC.

Yep. I made this my wife's everyday card. She doesn't want a purse full of cards and doesn't care to think about which card to use...so I figure might as well get SPG points. Just wish they had some damn bonus categories.

What works best for Africa? A photo safari is high on my priority list and they aren't cheap so if I can use miles to get there and back it would help.

No Ebola where I want to go. At least not yet.

Coach or biz/first seating?

Depending on your hub, I know star alliance has a good bit of availability(just had some friends go and used points). They took Ethiopian air for the long haul portion there and back. They weren't impressed.
