re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

I got the CSP because of the bonus, but I might keep it because it unless I get a different card with a fee. I really like that the card is metal too.

How do UR points compare to Amex membership rewards?

I don't have any Amex MR earning cards (Just an Amex SPG), but if I had to guess which are considered better by perusing blogs and such it would be UR points, and that is probably has something to due with the large signup bonuses.

If you are earning UR points, you need to keep that CSP if you can't get an Ink Bold or Ink Plus or you'll lose your transfer partner ability.

Ok credit card gurus...I just looked at the CSP and I'm sure I could get one if I applied. Should I maybe cancel my AMEX Gold and replace it with CSP? I think I am keeping the Platinum regardless.

Dude, the AMEX Gold is just overkill. I honestly don't understand the points thing you're trying to get. You already secured the bonus.

The platinum has all the benefits of the Gold with the exception of double accrue. If you go get a CSP, it has double points, is a VISA and you get a signup bonus.

Diversify your wallet. Not all places take AMEX. And like I said earlier, your spend isn't enough to justify paying an additional fee to get 10-12K points because it honestly is only about $75 redeemable credit.

Dude (didn't know men still said this by the way), that is entirely my point/question. I had the fee waived on the Gold and I've got the bonus points already. That was the point of my question since I already have the Platinum.

It's very diversified already. I'm just looking to get "better" cards and will drop several of my current visa cards I already have if I get the CSP. I'll just keep the oldest one I have so that won't impact my length of credit facet of my credit score.
I think I'll just go get the CSP now, drop the AMEX gold, keep the Platinum, and get rid of all other Visa's but for the oldest.

The amount he spends on gas and groceries justifies him having both IMO.

It gets double points on restaurants and travel neither of which he has indicated he spends a significant amount on. But that sign-up bonus is worth it

This is something I really agree with and I do. I prefer to have a mastercard as my alternate card since Sam's takes it and not Visa or Amex.

He is spending $2k a month on groceries and gas. that isn't 10-12k points more its 24k more points

Congratulations! Your application for Chase Sapphire Preferred Card has been approved.

The deed is done. Will get 40,000 bonus points after I spend the initial requirement which is not difficult for me.
The question now is to axe the Gold? Or keep?

Yes, it's true I don't travel as much anymore, but like you said the sign-up makes it worth it especially since the fee is waived.

re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

I'll just lay out what I have and what I'm doing as of now.

In 2013, I got a Cap One Venture, CSP, Freedom, Amex SPG, and Chase Ink Plus.

I'll be downgrading/canceling Cap One this month. I only got it to improve my credit profile for the later cards.

2013 was spent getting my "keepers" that I intend to use for every day spend over the long term. The Amex SPG gives me diversification and access to a lot more airlines in case I need them.

Now, I'm on burner patrol, looking for cards that serve a specific purpose for specific travel plans.

Yesterday, I was approved for the Barclay's World Arrival. I got this card because I have to attend two separate weddings that just happen to be in Boston on back to back weekends in May. The receptions are at the Intercontinental and Hyatt, which are expensive, but $100 off the regular nightly rate so IMO, it didn't make sense to get their hotel specific cards for the free night bonuses, as I wouldn't get full value for them. I may end up keeping this card for the incidentals coverage (ticket taxes, non category spend, TripIt Pro and free FICO). We'll see.

These two trips would cost approx. $2,000 in airfare and hotels for two people, but as of this second, will cost me $1,000, and probably a bit less by May if I load up on Barclays a bit. Why people who are good with money are scared of credit cards is irrational.

Basically, you're trying to build a strategy, and be mindful of the next goal as you're reaching the one at hand. And I'll adjust as other programs get better/worse.

That sums it up nicely. That's what I'm trying to do. I think I may sit tight for a little while because I'm sure my credit score is about to take a small dip from all of these card approvals in a short period. I'm going to let it recover before making another move on any new cards/offers.

Ya, I see 91 days being the guideline.

I'm probably out for most of 2014, at least 6 months. Barclay's apparently is weird about inquiries AFTER you get their card and if I do need another one I'll use my fiancee who I only got two for last year. She is still on the fence with my activity as it pertains to her credit but I'll win her over eventually The savings on these weddings is doing wonders on that front . . . I think.

Mine thinks I'm out of control too. I tried to explain it to her but she doesn't get it or doesn't want to get it.
The fact that I have about a $10 balance on every credit card doesn't really scream warning signs that I'm out of control. Well, except for the AMEX which gets paid in full monthly. I use that in place of my debit card since there is no APR fee and I get points.

It's only 12K over the standard 1pt purchase with Platinum.

Sounds very familiar. The attention span on the intricacies of issues isn't the best, but I do my best to remain patient. After all, I need her credit profile, I mean, need her companionship.

I like it when someone notices the opportunity cost part of the equation. People sometimes overlook that.

Cap One has never liked me for some reason. Chase approved me for everything. AMEX loves me.

$2000 a month x 12 months = 24,000 points on platinum

$2000 a month x 12 months with Double Points = 48,000 points on Gold

48,000 - 24,000 = 24,000 points left on the table

It is not 12,000

ETA: Unless there is a limit on double points you can earn

re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

Chase had to be "massaged" for the first two but they handed me the business card no sweat, and my limits are rising pretty fast now, but I hear that is how it goes with them. "Country club" they say.

AMEX was a shite head for years but I was also in school a long while so it made sense.

I think I was borderline when I took up the "hobby," but I think my job/income got me in and now that I'm in, every body is cool with handing me credit.

Have you set up which airline you want to use for your $200 airline fee credit? You'll get a credit for $200 in luggage fees, liquor on the plane, etc. You will have to charge it on your card at first but then they take it off later from what I understand.
But you have to designate what airline you want it to be applied for.
