Are we conceding Cannon's return as the slam-dunk "most important" play in LSU history?
It's likely to be the play most talked about for the longest period of time, but I don't know that it had any affect on LSU's trophy case other than probably locking up the Heisman for LSU's only Heisman winner (which is important I guess). But LSU lost their next game, and then lost to Ole Miss at the end of the season anyway, and then didn't win a conference Championship for another 3 seasons and a National Championship for another 45 years.
There were probably some big plays in '58 but I don't know of any so I can't comment on that.
Personally if I had to pick a single play, I'd say Mauck to Green against UGA (Round 1) in 2003.

did you mean to say "important" or "famous"?
as others have pointed out, the Billy Cannon run is not the most important, but it is historically the most famous.
other "famous" plays as pointed out include: Blue Grass Miracle, Earthquake Game winnnig TD, Tennessee no time left winning TD by Ridley, although intended jokingly by another poster possibly the Wing fake punt TD (historically the first overturned TD due to new taunting rule).
But in the grand scheme of things, none of those really proved to be "important" towards winning a championship or changing a season.
Since you mentioned the Earthquake game as possible second, I'm just wondering if you really meant "famous" instead.

Most important is different than most famous.
Cannon and earthquake are famous, but in grand scheme of things, not the most important.
