Overall this will be a physical game. If LSU makes mistakes and/or is not motivated to play, Iowa can win and make it interesting at the very least.

Can we please put this comment away for awhile (until after the game)?

BrewHawk, great posts. I enjoy your bringing it to this thread. I can appreciate your exuberence re. your team's ability and the referenced LSU's mistakes, but gwilging had a 2 part (and/or) statement.

Was it the "if LSU makes mistakes" part or the "is not motivated to play" part that prompted your fiery reply?

If it was the "and/or is not motivated to play" part, gwilging has a point.

I have seen every LSU game this year. I have seen numerous Iowa games this year (yeah, I have this "record 5 games at once" thingy and played in the Rant's Pick'em contest).

You guys took it to Michigan. Ya'll went into Lincoln and played Nebraska lights out - Nebraska never knew what hit them.

Still, going back to the "motivation" part gwilging really does have a point.

I have seen LSU hold A&M to 10 points (34-10 game). Yeah, it was raining - so what? OK, corners played man - again, so what? And/or maybe the entire team was motivated?

I have also seen a loss to a lackluster Ole Miss team. I also saw LSU need to come back at the very end of the 4th Q to beat a so-so 3-9 Arkansas team.

Maybe motivation played a factor? LSU, certainly. Arkansas, without question. Arkansas played great against (on paper) a superior LSU team.

Motivation seems to work that way with wins and losses that any team experiences. Quite a factor. Jimmies and Joes. X's and O's. Yeah, I understand those factors. So do most fans, coaches and players. What I can't put my finger on as clearly is the motivation factor. Can't put this on paper - everyone struggles to do it when attempting to predict the outcome of a game.

Of course, this applies to Iowa as well. I just have not seen Iowa having this same motivation problem and playing down to the level of competition as LSU seems to exhibit this year. IMO.

This should be a great game. I totally respect your team. I just wonder which LSU team will show up.

Great posts. Great thread. Brewhawk, I see that you have posted some super, super additional great info. I would still like to share my thoughts.

Thanks for the reply and I understand where you're coming from. Over the years, Iowa has had way too many close games against inferior competition (Central Michigan last year, for example). Sometimes teams just don't play well, and I believe in my heart that it is due more to the opponent rising up and making plays when they need to rather than a letdown by our respective team. We just don't give the other team credit for succeeding.

I don't look at it as a motivation issue and really can't understand why a team wouldn't be motivated to win.

Maybe that's where the rub lies. I could understand taking a 3-9 Arkansas team lightly (maybe) and not expecting them to compete, but to take an 8-4 team lightly is just folly, and to say that it would take a poor game by your team for Iowa to beat LSU is just insulting.

Look forward to your future comments.

Thanks for your response. I can see your misgivings re. any responder that takes your very successful Iowa team "lightly". However, I did not say that. Maybe other responders did.

Your team lost to prob. the best 3 teams in the Big 10: Mich. State, Ohio State and Wisconsin. If you played them again, you could have prob. beaten 1 or 2 of those and had a 9-3 record like LSU or a 10-2 record. You also lost your opening game to N. Illinois, a team in the top 20 most of the year. Only in the final game of the year (MAC Championship) did Northern Illinois lose to Bowling Green. Your Iowa team has played superb, sound football all year.

Nor did I say it would take a poor game by Iowa for LSU to beat Iowa. Please read my post. Attribute this response to other posters maybe, but not me.

You guys won me over with your beatdown of Nebraska at their home field in Lincoln. No way do I think you can't compete with the finest teams in college football...

My shtick was the "motivation" factor. BTW, it applies to your Iowa team as well as my LSU team. No way was my previous post meant to be "insulting".

BTW, a big shoutout to my granddaughter Hiliary who is a Junior on full scholarship at Iowa. Their family is from Waterloo area. Yes, I pay attention to how your Iowa team is doing...

Love college football. Go Hawkeyes. Geaux LSU.

My comments aren't directed at you at all, but rather countless other posters here who have made the comments I mentioned in various other threads. You're the type of poster that make the give and take very enjoyable, because you realize the only reason we're all here is because of our passion for college football.

He has shown very good judgement considering he hadn't taken a snap until this season.

We would have beaten NIU in our opener, but he threw a pass that should have never been thrown. The melt down on our boards, directed mostly at the play call, was epic, and showed me once again, that most don't understand what they are watching.

I don't think he saw the NIU defender, who waited and jumped the route.

Brew is spot on with some of these comments. LSU fans seem to think the only way they lose is if their team doesnt care enough about playing Iowa and isnt fully motivated. That is not the case. As usual for Iowa respect isnt given before the game but usually earned during the game.

I think what most people mean is there is an obvious athleticism gap between the two teams. LSU has the superior athletes, however, if they don't play to their best capabilities Iowa will win. No disrespect to Iowa or their program, but I think it's pretty obvious that LSU has the far superior athletes.

That doesn't mean that LSU is better than Iowa. If both teams played their best, I think LSU win's every time. BUT playing your best never happens in football. You can't sustain perfection.

Tiger fans are confident, but I think they should be. Look at recruiting. Look at the athletes LSU has accumulated. It's an impressive bunch. Doesn't mean they will win. Ugly dudes get hot chicks. Upsets happen. That's why they play the game.

Very accurate. There are no Iowa fans who understand football that think the athletes compare to what LSU has right now. There really are no Iowa fans who think that the 2013 Hawkeyes are even comparable to some of the better recent Iowa team

Iowa is improving, and could win on execution and fundamentals, that is something they generally excel at under Ferentz.

The game will tell us a lot about how far we have really come along after a 4-8 season last year. We had some attrition, and a conditioning incident that has hurt us badly, and are finally starting to heal from that. We're on the way back, but I don't believe we are there yet.

The thing that people don't seem to get is that there's much more than being a good athlete to being a good football player.

I agree that Iowa may not be on par athletically with LSU (although that gap is probably a lot less than most on here seem to think). But when it comes to football player quality, the Hawks take a back seat to nobody (when able to avoid injuries due to a lack of depth due to being a developmental program).

I would say if you want to look for a shortcoming in Iowa's program it would be the lack of quality depth that we've had over the years (although I would argue that's improving). Typically our first stringers have been able to play with anyone, but as injuries often do happen during the course of a season, the Hawks' 2nd and 3rd stringers aren't nearly (yet) as gifted as teams that recruit higher profile players. The blueblood teams just sub in another high school all-american and keep on trucking.

Iowa has been very fortunate this year in regards to injuries (knock on wood), and therefore in a good position at this point of the season to compete with pretty much anybody, even a "powerhouse" SEC program.

They put their slot receiver on our LB and just wore him out. TJ Moe had 15 catches for 150 yards

we also had different types of OLB's then. we've since gone to more sleek, athletic LB's than we did back then.

Iowa has also opened up their D mind so to speak and are willing to bring in different packages for situations and teams.

so I'm not sure if that is as big of a concern as it used to be.

Now, WTBS, matchups with LSU WR's are still going to be a challenge

I am most interested in how their news QB manages the game. I assume they will run more than normal but can he make plays for 4 quarters?

Me too. Unfortunately for Iowa's history with new QB's and some mobile QB's, we might make him look like Johnny Football.

I'd say if he is accurate, we will be in trouble.

re: Iowa vs LSU breakdown

Wow, more threads like this please! Actual insight and intelligent back and forths! This site really is pathetic at times but this thread is delivering. Keep up the good work on both sides. Glad to get a little insight on our opponent too. You guys know your Hawkeyes!

I see this game ending up 1 of 2 ways...

1. LSU's offense exploits Iowa's secondary, runs the ball with success, and minimizes penalties. On defense, they play tough, keep assignments, and swarm to the ball (reference the Texas A&M performance). This one is the more unlikely option.

or

2. LSU comes out lethargically, expecting to win and not playing to win, thus leading to a tough game. This performance will be peppered with lots of bone headed penalties, sloppy all around play, and bad or no adjustments. This is sadly more likely to occur.

I see Iowa giving us a good game because they are the polar opposite of us. They play sound, disciplined football and fight all game long. We on the otherhand, tend to lean on our talent too much at times. We also lack a lot of discipline, rarely give maximum effort every down, and get sloppy too easily (which is infuriating!). I have yet to see another team have a delay of game penalty called directly after a timeout or kickoff... That is just pathetic! Hahaha

re: Iowa vs LSU breakdown

I was just reminded of an ugly reality of many bowl games. The layoff results in slopy play with lots of penalties many times.

I'd sum of the two teams this way. Two places along the spectrum between horrible and Champion.

Iowa = Aspirational on its way back

LSU = Accomplished.

We have rarely had QBs who can do this, but we've managed to do alright over the years.
