College Football needs to make defensive pass interference a spot foul

I think they should do this. I know some people say they like that it's only 15 yards and that it is more fair, but it is not and it encourages defenses to commit pass interference.
If you are beat beyond 15 yards it makes sense to commit the penalty since you are only losing 15 yards instead of more yards and you in many cases are preventing a touchdown.
We have all seen games where the defense blatantly commits the foul and holds the receiver because it means the lesser of two evils.
No one has convinced me that the college game is better because it is only a 15 yard foul.

I can't decide whether this or having like a 60 yard penalty for guys getting tangled up is worse. I think I'll go with the latter and say keep it at 15 yards, but I definitely get where you're coming from

This is one rule I've probably gone back and forth on at least a million times in my life.

Depends if it is intentional or not

it's too much of a judgement call. Keep it at 15.

Agreed, but you can't expect the refs to judge intent at full speed. I'm not really sure there's a good answer to this so I just went with what I think is the lesser of two evils

If you keep it at 15, somebody is going to get screwed by it.
If you make it a spot foul, somebody is going to get screwed by it.
If you let the officials decide each call on the basis of intent or egregiousness, then that's a can of really yucky worms.
It's one of the more unfortunate and impossible dilemmas in sports rules because there's really no perfect solution, and it's only fitting that it would be related to the forward pass, which wasn't part of the game until it was implemented specifically for safety reasons. Without it, everybody would be Navy.

at full speed true it's hard to judge intent, but if the penalty happens in the endzone the ball needs to be put at the two yard line

Couldn't agree more with this post. Well-stated.

The ideal situation would for pass interference to have two different variations.
The first would make PI a spot foul as long as you are inside your opponents 50. I agree it is extremely frustrating to watch teams blatantly take down a WR because they know giving up 15 yards is much better than 6 points.
However, as many have stated, I do not trust the collegiate refs to get it right. We have all seen the fiasco that has resulted from the dreaded "targeting" rule. To counteract this I would suggest keeping the traditional 15 yard rule as long as you are on/at yourside of the 50.
Is this solution perfect? Absolutely not, but it sure beats watching WRs get tackled after they beat a CB to prevent a TD.

How about this... if the pass interference occurs on a not too deep post route, or something like that, then it is a 15 yard penalty.
But if it occurs on a deep ball where the receiver has everybody beat, then it's a spot foul.
How about that?

Disagree. The NFL spot foul PI penalty is just about the worst rule in all of sports.

I'd be OK with it being tiered. Up to like 25 yards on bombs. It's still hard to catch a 45-55 yard bomb. I know that's a weird number but so is giving a guy 50+ yards on a pass that wasn't caught.

How about 15 yards + a power play next play from scrimmage? 11 on 10 for the next play.

What about a "Clear Path" rule to borrow a phrase from basketball?
Something like a spot foul if the player had an uninhibited path to the end zone and is at a point nearer the goal-line than the defender who committed the penalty.
Otherwise 15 yards.

I like the 15 yrd penalty for this reason.

The refs get that call wrong way too much to warrant 40+ yard penalties. And it's not really a knock on them, it's an incredibly tough call to make.

No, that is one of the few things college has over the NFL. How many times has a PI taken the ball from midfield to inside the 10 based on some ref's "judgement" or a WR's flopping?
The only reason San Diego went to the Super Bowl in 94 instead of the Steelers was two 50 yard PI's.
