re: Don't fret, LSU fans...this run by Alabama will end soon...

All responsibility for success & failure is on Le Miles shoulders. We pay him big money to figure all this out. I am embarrassed how he wastes our talent and gets less than championship play from them. I am embarrassed of him and his bizarre rants, peculiar behaviors, ie grass eating, less than articulate when interviewed. Weird clapping on sideline, that look that he doesn't know what the heck is going on in the game, little emotion during the game that correlates that he is plugged in. Fingers in his ear or in his nose on National TV. Everyone LSU fans and other notice this strange unprofessional, quirky & weird behavior. He simply is not going to bring LSU to where we should and need to be. Fans can't figure out the continued pay raises year end and out. I am just sick year end and year out due to his failures.

quote:

Les just signed a contract extension at the beginning of the season.

Miles renegotiated his contract after he hoodwinked Alleva into thinking that he might bolt for Arkansas. In that renegotiation, LSU removed the automatic rollover clause from his contract. If LSU gave him another contract extension, then they got played.

quote:

He's not even close to being on the hot seat with the organization

An 8-5 or 7-6 finish this season (assuming we lose the bowl game) followed by a similar record next season, and his seat will get pretty warm, especially if Bama wins the BCS again and we lose out on key recruits. The TAF big wigs will find the money somewhere to buy him out when the time comes. I wouldn't be surprised if they've already started the process because they see the writing on the wall. Hopefully, they would get rid of Miles before he has a chance to completely run the program into the ground,

Damn good, very reasonable post.

At this point I'm just worried about recruiting. Superior athletes are needed to overcome the seemingly loose, undisciplined ship he runs.

Recruit better than we have. I agree with one of the posters in that I have seen enough of Stud. Hire Mawae if he is interested; if not try to get the guy that left Bama to go to the Eagles. Kelly won't make it there.

I'm a little late to the discussion..my main problem is that, regardless if/when Bama goes on the decline again, this dominant run of theirs will be branded permanently in history, much like the Bryant days. We will all hear about this until the day we die.

As long as LSU is winning, I won't care what the Gumps may say.

Les needs to stick to recruiting and stay out of the way of his coordinators ways. He needs to fire stud because he is the most overrated O line coach In the sec. How many first rounders have we produced under Les's regime? Our O line is the worst unit year In and year out.

I would think if LSU fans knew one thing it would be that you're only as good as your last game

Maybe be LSU recruiter but have someone else be the head coach? His run run pass is predictable.

re: Don't fret, LSU fans...this run by Alabama will end soon...

quote:

1. Saban won't be there forever. And his successor will struggle to fill his legendary shoes just like Zook did at Florida, Solich did at Nebraska, etc. If he doesn't leave this year to take the Texas job, he will probably be retiring in the near future.

2. AJ McCarron won't be back. He has been the key to their run. He is the ultimate game manager, and his consistency is the reason they have only lost twice since he has been a starter. The next QB for Bama, regardless of the number of recruiting stars he had coming out of high school, will also have big shoes to fill.

As a practical matter, these two points are probably spot on (though I don't think Bama's offensive production is dependent upon elite QB talent), but I'm not a fan of the "let's not worry about getting better, they'll get worse" argument.

quote:

Outside of the last quarter and a half of this past game, LSU has been neck and neck with Alabama...

And the MNCG. Can't forget that one.

quote:

I do know that we went from being 13-1 to 10-3 and now 7-3 through 10 games of this season, with tough games still to come. That's a decline, albeit not as drastic as some chicken littles like to proclaim. But it is a decline and it is critical that Les rights the ship next season.

Agree. I don't think we're in a death spiral, but we need a recovery.

quote:

Question: What do you think are the 2 or 3 major changes that Les needs to make to catch up to Alabama and keep ahead of Auburn, Ole Miss and Texas A&M?

1. We need to quit pretending as though losing top-10 ranked recruits from the state is no big deal. It's simply not acceptable. I don't know what Miles can do or what relationships he needs to fix, but something needs to change. Our recruiting is no longer anything special considering what's at our fingertips.

2. O-line play has to get better.

1) Improved line play. We were out muscled by Bama in the last two quarters and failed to dominate a depleted Ole Miss team. That speaks to conditioning and mental toughness.

2) Retaining more kids for their senior year. The kids who are going in the first round or even the second round can argue they should leave but our program our coaches should be able to explain the benefits of staying one more year and making more money on the first (and only guaranteed) NFL contract. It is great to argue you want to make it to your second contract sooner but the reality is the average NFL player career is just over 3 years and you should position yourself for a better first contract and finish your degree if you aren't going in at least the second round.

3) Avoiding the letdown games to teams like Arkansas and Ole Miss that we've seen over the last six years. Losing games to quality opponents like Alabama, Florida, UGA, or even Clemson can happen and will happen. That we can live with. Upset losses to teams of the quality of Arkansas and Ole Miss can also happen BUT the frequency with which this has happened is now disturbing and says bad things about the ability of LSU to win at the level the administration now charges us for the privilege to enjoy.

re: Don't fret, LSU fans...this run by Alabama will end soon...

Basically, this is a fair assessment. It has its problems, but it is a fair assessment.

I knew Ron Gaspar personally. Ron was an ex-football coach who had suffered an accident that left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. He wrote about football from his home in Chalmette and would come on WWL Radio with Hap Glaudi and provide football expertise for Hap's show. Ron was known around New Orleans as "Mr. Football."

When Bear Bryant visited the Chalmette area late in his career, he came to see Ron Gaspar. Ron made the obvious statement to Bryant that once Bryant retired, Alabama would have a difficult time replacing him. In this prediction Ron Gaspar proved to be prophetic, as obvious as his prophecy was.

The question, as I see it, is whether Alabama will learn from that experience. Or maybe it is rather that a Bryant or a Saban only comes along about once every fifty years, and the question then becomes, is Alabama going to be fortunate enough to get him when he does come along.

When Steve Spurrier had thrashed around in the pros and then at Duke University, Florida was able to pluck him off the coaching tree, probably for a number of reasons. Spurrier was a Florida alumnus, for one, and then he was, and is, a sort of maverick. He would reject an offer from Alabama right before Saban accepted his Alabama offer, and I don't think Spurrier would have accepted an Alabama offer back when he was at Duke. Spurrier is all about doing something that no one else has ever done, and it may be that he thought he could never top Bear Bryant anyhow.

It's not hard to see where LSU people are coming from. Your immediate concern is this bumper-crop recruiting class that is sitting out there in your state right now. You just came away from another concern, whether you could beat Alabama and Saban at this point in Les Miles' career. That didn't go so well, and so now you are rightfully concerned to keep Fournette and company -- what's left of it -- in state.

In spite of ourselves, we really can't predict the future. We don't KNOW how long Nick Saban is going to be at Alabama. You can come on here and SAY you know, probably in hopes of persuading Fournette and company, but the truth is, you can't predict what Nick Saban is going to do, and neither can I.

Aside from the fact that Saban is "poised on the your border" with his recruiting lieutenants, you probably don't feel much different than people in Georgia or Tennessee do about Saban and Alabama. He raids those two states for players too. Then again, you had him, and you lost him, and that's an experience they haven't had. But I wish you might, for example, just get on the Volquest or AJC Football Forums, and you would see that your feelings about Alabama and Nick Saban aren't that unique.

I will say this about Saban, and I think it needs to be said. He is recruiting as hard right now, as far as I can see, as he ever has. He spoke to and met with the recruits this past weekend after laying the LSU game plan aside.

Saban right now is two behind Bear Bryant (four to six) in number of national championships won. He said when he came to Bama that he intended to do better than ANYone else had ever done there. As has been pointed out on ESPN, Saban can more or less snap his fingers at Alabama, and the powers that be provide him with whatever he calls for, so far as the football program is concerned.

I recall something said on WWL by a member of the Sugar Bowl Committee about thirty years ago. He said that nothing ever gets done about a football program until the people supporting it get tired of the situation and do something about it. That happened at Alabama in the mid-nineteen-fifties and in the first decade of the 21st century. Who knows what the future holds? As Wayne Huizenga said, "It is what it is."

"Greg McElroy" won't be back. Nuff said. So who's the next smart, drop back, pro style passing QB that's in line this time? Notice you don't see too many DTQB's at Bama. Wonder why?

There needs to be an overhaul of the staff. There are weak links there that need to be strengthened.

Start with the Defensive Secondary coach and go from there.

Offensive Line recruiting needs to dramatically improve. Go up north and bring back a few more baby Whitworth's (Pocic) We can do better than Stud coaching the OL too. Give Kevin Mawae a shot at it.

Frank Wilson is vastly over rated as the Recruiting Coordinator. Our classes have weak spots that have not met expectations and do not fill needs adequately. Keep Frank as RB coach, but I'd hire another coach to be the Recruiting Coordinator. (Ed Orgeron) Let him coach the DL. Move Brick to LB's (Where he played in college) and slide Chavis back to solve the Chinese Fire Drill mess that is the Defensive Secondary. (Or hire Cooper back from South Florida) Chavis or Cooper taking over the secondary would result in an immediate and pronounced improvement.

Ensminger (TE's), Henry (WR's) and McGaughey (ST's) represent mediocrity. LSU can do better at all these positions. Miles needs to start hiring coaches with their technical teaching abilities as the primary factor. Their recruiting ability should be strong, but not the primary reason that they're hired. The athletes are not being developed at LSU after they make it onto campus. Hire coaches that can coach first and foremost, like does with the Red Devils. That's a major difference between the two programs. Lil Nicky doesn't have any tolerance for assistants that can't coach very well.

I agree with the level of play going up and down. This shows a weakness in coaching. They aren't being coached up. Each player is playing to his own level.
