re: I'll break the ice: Pokémon X and Y

Just beat the Elite 4/Champion/Tall Guy in Y. I am a big Pokémon guy, always have been, since I first got Red for my 11th birthday back in the day. Here are my impressions:
-I wish they did more with the 3D, but they have to accomidate for the 2DS as well
-Music was good
-Disappointed that there are only 69 new Pokémon. I understand they had to make 3D models for every Pokémon, and do Mega Evolutions, but 69 is a little skimpy.
-Disappointed that no old Pokémon got new evolutions like in Diamond/Pearl. I know Mega Evolutions are there, but I am talking about old Pokémon who desperately need evolutions. Like Farfetch'd and Delibird.
-Likewise I am disappointed Game Freak didn't experiment with new type combos. Only 12 new type combos for this game. We still don't have a Fire/Poison type, or Ice/Fighting type, etc. but we did get yet another Water/Rock type :(
-Gym leaders were too easy
-Elite 4 was easy, but Champion beat me the first time. Was not ready for Mega Gardevoir.
Anyway looks like there is a lot of post game content. Throughout the generations of Pokémon this game for me has been all about the post game content, like completing the Pokedex and breeding/raising strong teams, instead of the main quest. Looking forward to see what else is there.

I think that's a good thing. I didn't play last generation's game, but all the Pokemon as a whole fricking sucked, and not only that, but you were forced to play with them and only run into them. That was a bad idea when you had nothing but bad Pokemon to deal with. I think they learned from it and only made Pokemon they thought were actually good. The only truly terrible ones were Fairy Type, but they were pretty much forced to make a lot of those.

I guess the thing I don't like is all the new Pokemon and the entirely different naming style they have.
With the first set it was easy to remember the types and then apply strength/weaknesses.
Now you can only rarely discern the type from the name, leading you to have to memorize 600 Pokemon.

I've didn't play B&W. Purchased Black v2 along with a 3DS XL to prepare for X&Y but never finished.
Most of us haven't played a Pokemon game in a long time. It was already overwhelming learning what we have missed before X/&Y.

Late to the game, but had to admit that, as a grown-arse-man, I asked my wife and kids to buy me a Nintendo 2DS and Pokemon X for Christmas. Hadn't played since I think Pokemon Pearl (maybe).
Loving it so far.
I liked that there have been a much bigger variety of Pokemon in the first few areas of tall grass. Seems like in the older games, there were only 2 or 3 different possibilities to catch before the first gym you got to. I already had like 18-20 pokemon, all different kinds, before I went through the first gym this time.
Also, just got the new Exp. Share, fricking awesome!

Exp. Share is one of the greatest things they have added to the game. I love it.

Nothing wrong with this. I purchased a 3DS XL in October just to play this game. It was worth the investment because X/Y was a blast to play.
You will find more uses for that 2DS; your next game should be "A Link Between Worlds".

Yeah, makes it easier for me to just play Charizard.

My brother bought me Pokemon White:2 and Castlevania: Mirror Fate for Christmas as well, so I will check those out whenever I get around to taking Pokemon X out of the system, but yeah, I saw the Zelda game too while looking around. Looks more like old school NES Zelda than that open world/3d twilight princess/occarina of time stuff that I ended up not liking. I will probably try it out eventually.

It is basically a remake of A Link to the Past. I also highly recommend playing and not waiting, the game is incredible and a ton of fun.

Oh, I will play it, no doubt. Just gonna wait until I finish/get tired of Pokemon before I buy it. Might be able to snag it cheaper than $40 by that time =)

Returned my previously used copy of kid icarus and they happened to have a used copy of X which I picked up. Foul bachelor frog mode engaged. Started with the fire type and picked up the squirtle. What is the deal with mega evolutions? I haven't played a pokemon game since red. Beat the first gym no problem with farfetchd

Don't overlook the "mystery gift" thing that pops up when you turn the game on and it gets to the "continue" screen. choose to receive the mystery gift via the internet, and it gives you a free torchic (fire type starter from one of the old games) that is pretty darn powerful.
I actually saw this right after I started the game and had already picked the fire starter, reset the game and went with the grass, plan on picking squirtle when that option comes available and I will have a starter pokemon for all three types real early in the game, sweet!
Was the Kid Icarus game any good? I loved the original on NES, but from the screenshots I saw of the #DS version, it looked almost like a 3D FPS or something, instead of the original sidescrolling (top scrolling really) action of the original.

It's good, but it's a 3d shooter. I guess how much you'll like it depends on how in love you are with the stylus interface. It's certainly the best implementation of the 3ds hardware, but it was too much work for me when all I really want from my 3ds is Pokemon Mario and Zelda. The storytelling is pretty good too.

I played about 50 hours on it. I also haven't touched it again in over a month.

I can see how that would be really easy, but I just wasn't that into it.

Just discovered wonder trades, holy moly that's awesome!
You telling me I can trade off the box full of weedles, caterpies, flethclings, and pidgeys I caught in the first area for Charmanders, froakies, dratinis, a level 24 scyther, a level 49 jigglypuff, and a bunch of random dragon type level 1 hatchlings?
yes please!
also, i now have like 5 level 1 charmanders, lol.

The GTS is pretty awesome too. Just breed a starter with a ditto and put it up on the block and someone somewhere will make the trade you want as long as it isn't a legendary
Posted on 12/28/13 at 3:45 pm to Cockopotamus
GTS? Don't know what that is yet. Is the breeding stuff all after you beat the main quest of the game? I've for a long way to go for that :)
New problem after meeting around with wonder trades and getting all these cool Pokémon that shouldn't be available for a long time: now all I want to do is level up all these level 1 Pokémon, lol. Fortunately, it happens super fast with the exp share in this game. Biggest problem now is trying to narrow it down to 6 favorites to use for my party, lol.
