I hope it was worth it for ole Stephen Short.
Charges dropped, he's getting thrown under the bus and he's going to cost his buddies in the Covington police a lot of easy money since they're getting the boot on game details.

My job as a LEO is to enforce LAWS which is what I do when I am working HS games. We don't work for the school, nor do we work for the refs. We have a job to do. I do follow directions of my supervisors and my officers follow my directions. But I don't follow directions from people who don't know what my job is and how to do my job. Just like I don't try and tell others how to do their jobs if I don't know how to do it.
Sounds like that's the problem that Lt.s Short had with the officials - he didn't understand their job but that didn't stop him from trying to tell them how to do it.

The Police Department. I have worked at Catholic School and Public school games. At all times I was paid by my PD. I don't know the situation here. I have also avoided working games when my children are involved. That way I can watch and enjoy the game, not be working.

That's how LEOs operate, got to protect their own, even if they're in the wrong.
That's how the Covington PD got into trouble, protecting their boy Steve.

That is true. I am not defending him in any way at all. I am just trying to clarify what our job is at games. I have also never had a problem with a official at a game. I am friends with most of them and we all get along.

We have some excellent well trained PD's in Ms. We also, just like La., have some really low paid unstable departments that are terrible.

When my cop buddy told me he made $12 / hour it blew my mind. How can you pay someone that low and give them that level of responsibility?

And I could say the same about the police I have dealt with at games and to be fair a couple of years ago CPD had our backs when a fan from Natchitoches decided to show his arse following a ball game.
I've never had an officer at a game, when I asked him to ask people to move back say anything other than (to paraphrase) "no problem, how far back do you want them?"
The funniest was one night when I was having trouyble with a cameraman who thought the rules didn't apply to him - so I asked one of the deputies, for future reference if he would mind talking to the guy if the problem persisted.
He said "you point him out and his arse is gone, just let me know."

That's because we both want to work together and get through the game unnoticed.
Being unnoticed is the best thing for both the police and the refs. That means everything went smooth.

Cooper said the police investigation is being led by Capt. Jack West, who was on the sideline next to Short when the arrests were made and has been interim police chief.
I think your boy Short will be just fine.

You are confusing your LHSAA rules with laws. I don't care about your rules. My job is enforce the laws and protect everyone at the game. In no way is a ref ever gonna tell me how to do my job. But I also am a professional at my job and would never put myself in this officers position.
with all due respect, you are the one confused here. there was no law being broken, it was not a criminal situation, it was a game jurisdiction situation and the officials are there to manage the game, the LEO are there to manage the crowd.
the officials have jurisdiction over the game unless a law is being broken. In this case, the cop was protecting unauthorized spectators who had no business on the sideline. He was not doing his job, he was there in uniform acting as a fan. The official has every right to ask the LEO to move anyone and everyone from the field of play. The LEO has no right to deny that request and when he got confrontational he threw his professional responsibility and oath out the window and became just another dad. Albeit a dad with a badge and a gun and an over inflated sense of self worth.
quote:
The officer maybe paid by the school as security, but as soon as he takes law enforcement action he reverts back to a police officer under his PDs jurisdiction
he took "law enforcement action" when he was embarrassed by the officials and wanted to show his buddies who was in charge. There was no need to take "law enforcement action" because he was in the wrong. There was no law being broken, he made up a reason to remove the officials from the field of play because he resented the fact that they were trying to make him do something he didnt want to do. However he was being paid by the school to do just that. He confused his status as a buddy/fan/dad with his status as a paid security guard and sworn LEO. And now he has been humiliated by the media, the mayor and the new chief.

I fully understand what you are saying, but LEO's don't have to follow LSHAA rules or in my case MHSAA. We follow the rules of our department and the Laws of the city, parish in your case, and state. The refs do not have any authority over us. In some cases the school has authority over th officers because they have their own Police Department such as Moss Point and Biloxi School Districts.
Does that mean we aren't working together to creat a good enviroment for the players and spectators? No, it just means that LEO's aren't guided by the rules of LHSAAA. In this case, the officer saw what he thought was a violation of the law and acted. Was he right? Either he was dead wrong or the city bowed down to LHSAA. I don't know the full story so I won't speculate on that part.

We pay our clerks more than that. Holy crap.

Not all. In my department the officers don't want bad cops working with us and they do what they can to push the bad ones out. Are we perfect? Heck no, not even close. They want guys they can trust and will do the right thing. Sadly not all departments are this way and that brings a bad light to the rest of us.

Dude he there at the discretion of the school to do a job at any point during the game he can be told you are not doing the job that we want you to do so you can go back where you came from.

Either:
A) the cop was paid by the school to help keep crowd control, or
B) the cop was just at the game as a spectator
Either way, the cop at the game I does need to follow the referees request. The cop himself, is not above the rules of the athletic contest.
The attitude that you have stated at least twice in this thread, "I am the law and I don't have to listen to anyone but my supervisor" is the exact reasons there are civilian/LEO distrust. Cops are supposed to SERVE and protect, not get into bullying matches and power struggles.

Was he being paid by Covington PD or St. Paul's? If he was being paid by the PD then he was working for them not the school. If St. Paul's was payng him then they do have the right to "fire" him.
