The LHSAA guy said officer was acting on his own as a spectator. The people causing the issues were the officers guests. He was a fan but showed up in his uni to get on the sideline. Confusion came in when ref thought he was working the game. Cop wasn't being paid and it was his people causing the issue.

Ruh-roh. Here comes the lawsuit.

An off duty cop is disturbing the peace at a local football game, and in turn starts arresting people on trumped up charges.

Nice.

True, I have had insults hurled at me many times.
Part of the job, if I wanted to be loved I would have been a fireman.

Intimidation of an officer can be as simple as saying, "I will have your job!" according to Ms Law. I don't know what La law says though.

So telling a cop you want to become a cop is intimidating to you guys? I'd grow thicker skin.

There is a lot of hate here for cops. I am siding with the refs in this case but with a Brother, Father, Uncle and Grandfather as Portland Police, I don't envy their job. However, I doubt any of them would've pulled the stunt that the officer did in this scenario. I chalk it up to a bad apple.

Mr. Gulf coast tiger when you are on a security detail you are being paid by the entity that you are providing security for. Please tell me that you understand that because if you don't further conversation on this subject is pointless

I normally am the guy backing the cops. I'm always defending them on the OT, but in this case, the cop is 100% wrong. Basically, he had to show that ref who was boss.

That's pretty much the thought process of the majority of LEO's these days.

They don't work for us.

They rule us.

I think your boy Short will be just fine.

I understand that, but we don't work for the schools when we work the games. We work for the PD and are assigned to work with the schools. I don't know how St Paul's does it. Do you? Does anyone?

Google "Covington Police + excessive force"

Note the number of cops fired and lawsuits concerning use of excessive force and that the former Chief was fired earlier this year.

Not in your context, but by law if you threaten a officer with losing his job while he is performing his duties then you are violating the law. He can charge you with that. The guys that usually get charged with this are guys that threatend DUI officers, usually guys with a little money and to much alcohol.

Covington police can get their gig back now

"Mayor Cooper also says the New Orleans Football Officials Association has withdrawn its request to drop Covington police for game security."

Covington Mayor Cooper announced Thursday that charges have been dropped against two referees who were arrested during the St. Paul's vs. Mandeville football game last Friday.

The police said they had 25 witnesses and video that backed up the cop's version. They were all set to go to court.

....not.

Later, the Mayor said

quote:

On behalf of the city of Covington, I offer my sincere apology to Mr. Radcliffe and Mr. Gambino ... for the manner in which this was handled," Cooper said.

"We all agree this could have easily been handled differently. It is my goal to put this matter behind us, gain credibility for the Covington Police Department under its new leadership and restore a positive image to our great city."

Bad move IMO unless they have been guaranteed Short will be terminated.

I don't think any refs will be having problems with Covington police officers for a while.

Still, this article kind of implies that Short is going to be in some kind of trouble.

LINK

quote:

As to whether any disciplinary actions would be brought against Short or any other police officer involved, the chief said, "My concentration (Wednesday) was the incident at St. Paul's. It became apparent that things should've been handled differently, and my focus was on restoring the credibility of those two gentlemen (Radcliffe and Gambino). "I will now look at it from an administrative standpoint and take the necessary actions. I'd ask you to grant me patience while I do that; I've been on the job for like 12 hours. This will take me time. I'll have to navigate through the civil service aspect of everything, but at the end of the day, we'll do the right thing."
