re: Baton Rouge Red Light Cameras Approved for 5 More Years

It's not about safety. It's unconstitutional and it's a money grab.

Now, back on your knees peon.

And don't say it's just bigger government, because it's NOT. It's using technology in place of a policeman sitting by a traffic signal, OR manning a speed trap in the case of the speeding cameras. It's LESS government. And if it's a money grab, then that's fine too.

The issue is...it's ONLY a money grab.

This was from the other thread but it fits here too.

I know this has been addressed before, but if safety was the real reason for these things, other means would be tried before cameras. How about...and I'm just spit-balling here...not having one light turn green instantaneously as the crossing light turn red? Why not leave a second or two and then turn the light allowing a straggler or two to make it through safely? After all, the reason for lights, stop signs, and basically all traffic signals in the first place is to allow drivers to essentially govern themselves safely without having to have a police man standing at every intersection directing traffic. Why? Because if no drivers ever ran a light and were ticketed for it, what would the city do without that money?

But it isn't about safety...it's about revenue generation. In Lafayette this is obvious based on which intersections have the cameras and which ones are enforced. No cameras at Johnston and Ambassador...no cameras at Ambassador and Kaliste Saloom, etc. If it was about safety, the cameras would be where the most accidents have traditionally occurred...not 2 within 200 yards of each other on Camellia in River Ranch on a stretch of road that's 35 which ought to be 45.

FWIW I've never gotten one of these tickets.

SAFETY PROGRAM!? Do they honestly think we're blind? I feel like I'm in that movie Idiocracy.

They say in the article that every red light camera allows an officer to be stationed in a subdivision... Are you telling me they would otherwise be sitting at intersections waiting for people to run a red light!? Gimme a break. This makes me want to gouge out their testes with a spoon.

By no means am I an attorney, or an expert on the constitution, but how is it unconstitutional? I heard this argument before, but I never heard why.

It's a civil violation, they can't legally boot your vehicle.

They can't legally acquire your social security number without your permission.

Not sure what kind of cameras they are using in BR. Where I live they have a "clear" pic of the driver and the license plate number.

I buy that it's not a safety issue, and it's really a money grab, but why is that a bad thing. Person breaks a law, gets ticketed, pays a fine. What's the harm in that? The person is not claiming a law wasn't broken. I'm assuming the accused could fight this just like they can fight it if an officer issued the ticket.

So again, what's the issue if it's a money grab?

government contracting its policing duties out to private companies doesn't sound a bit odd to you?

also, due to the shifting of this from a criminal to a civil process, the population is denied certain due process/rights

NO!

When you're ticketed by an officer by you signing the ticket you're not admitting guilt. You're given a court date. I'm assuming you have the same rights to fight these camera tickets...do you not?

Denied rights and theft is a good thing?

No, you do not. You need to research about these cameras more.

Ya'll are not denying that you've broken a law, but bitching about the way you were caught.

I have never received a red light ticket. I am 100% against them. It does NOT use tech as a replacement for a police officer. Not until I can face that camera and talk to it in a court of law.

Want safety?? Make the yellow lights last 2 seconds longer. Instead many cities have been caught shortening the caution light to make more money.

no you're not. you're admitting receipt of the notice of a criminal accusation

exactly. the ticket is just notice of the (1) accusation and (2) court date. that's it

What rights are you giving up? Don't you have the same rights whether you get a ticket from a camera or an officer?

quote:

government contracting its policing duties out to private companies doesn't sound a bit odd to you?

NO, as long as I still have the rights to fight if I feel I've received a ticket unjustly. Sorry, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. And do you think the government does a better job of running operations that private organizations?
