Weed is much more open than cocaine. Guys wouldn't even think of telling most girls that they've snorted coke, but really won't hesitate to tell them that they've smoked weed.

So...what drug offenses are blacks arrested for?

Just because they use cocaine and designer drugs less than whites doesn't mean blacks don't use drugs to an equal or greater proportion.

There was a story on NPR On Point a couple years ago about this. The statistics were jarring. It is easy to come to the conclusion that there is a racial war to fill our prisons with blacks.

Well according to the guest on On Point, whenever it was, blacks go to jail for simple possession of marijuana. Even a small amount. Whites don't.

And as you well should know, once you have been arrested for any reason, you're probably not getting hired in this country. Especially if you are black.

Bingo.

I moved to DC to help push legislation in order to end mandatory minimums associated with the drug war a couple months back, and it is the only conclusion.

needs to happen. it is absolute shite that people with drug problems go to jail instead of treatment.

Then if they get a felony rap, they are in a situation where they have no hope of improving their lives because getting a job become nearly impossible.

Like I said earlier. I've known a few people with Marijuana tickets, but every black dude I know went to jail for it. Under an ounce is a municipal offense now in NOLA, so that a step in the right direction. Hard for that to show up in background checks.

And the person to push this on a national level will be a republican by the name of Rand Paul.

Probably has a lot to do with geologically where the drugs that are being taken are being taken. In other words, the whites taking drugs are doing it in places that are not generally as "policed" as where the majority of blacks are taking drugs.

Proximity to cops is what matters.

Not like cops aren't going to arrest someone because they're white, or are going to arrest them more just because they're black. That's absurd these days. imho.

It happens, remember after Katrina when NJ and New Mexico police said they couldn't deal with BRPD because of racism?

Could the stats possible reflect the difference between using and selling? User have smaller amounts of drugs in their possession whereas dealers have larger amounts of drugs in their possession.
Possession sentences vary by the amount your caught with. Maybe one group is more into use while the other is more into dealing.

I think this is a big part. Back in my college/drug "experimenting" days just about every dealer we would mess with was black and rarely held a job at the time. You have a much higher chance of getting arrested if your selling drugs rather than you and your friends smokin a j or hittin a few lines at a frat party. Being a dealer your going to have more drugs on you and constantly have people meeting you which increases your chance.of getting caught. Just my opinion.

ETA: The black dealers we knew rarely actually used the drugs other than weed.

one time I discovered a white lobster while deep sea fishing in the Gulf.

all kinds of money to made from it and all but I didn't want some fricking cartel sending a hit squad to my home,

used to live on Dauphin Island so I would have been an easy target for them.
