nope. We signed Meachem to coincide with putting Vilma on the IR designated to return list

This does not sound good.
Call me paranoid.

He was already on IR and not taking up a spot. So no, we can't bring anyone in because we are still at 53.
What it did do was save us about $1 mil on the cap.
I want to say what this means is that Chamberlain had an injury and didn't tell the Saints about it(or what it was) so they were allowed to cut him for not disclosing it with them.
And Meach took Vilma's spot. Vilma was still on the 53 until today. Chamberlain was IRed over a week ago I believe.

Why wouldn't the Saints automatically know?
Unless the injury he didn't disclose actually occurred before we ever signed him.

It was obvious something was going on because they never updated his status and it took them to I think right after the 3rd game to finally IR him.
As far as I know, players don't have to let team doctors determine stuff like ACL tears so he likely found out from an outside doctor and didn't disclose it.
Edit:
He did play the first preseason game but sat out the next 2 games before getting IRed.

I'm sure his agent will go to bat for him but the dude's been hurt the whole time he's been here.

That's just foolish, if so.

I agree but it's just speculation on my part.
Outside of him keeping the info from the Saints for who knows how long(I think it was very late or they would have IRed him as soon as they found out) I can't think of any other reason.

Wait, before we cut him today, where had we placed him?

He went on IR last Tuesday after the 3rd preseason game(when we had to get to 75).
LINK
"...linebacker Chris Chamberlain (unspecified) on the injured reserve list."
So that was Tuesday the 27 of Aug. and they still didn't know what the injury was, just that he wasn't recovering. I remember news came out later it was an ACL tear but that didn't come from the Saints.
So yeah I think he knew and didn't want to tell them.

if we don't know why he's injured and if it was a non-football related, would we get the cap $$ back? or is that all dependent on the fine print of his contract.

Being released from IR because he didn't disclose his injury cost him his base salary(players on IR still get paid their base salary). Thus the reason his agent will file a grievance.
From what I heard we will save about $1 mil. His signing bonus(if he had one) still counts against the cap.

thanks for clarifying, I read the 1mil part, but I wasn't sure if that included his bonus or just the base salary.

Chamberlain was once again placed on injured reserve during the Saints’ cut-down to 75 players last week. On Tuesday, the Saints released Chamberlain from their injured reserve list with a designation that he failed to disclose a physical condition. The move could allow the Saints to get out of financial commitments that were otherwise owed to Chamberlain.
However, Chamberlain’s agent, Mark Slough, isn’t buying the reasoning behind the Saints move. Slough tweeted Tuesday that it was “bull” that Chamberlain had a prior undisclosed condition the team wasn’t aware of and they intend to file a grievance over the move.

I'm hoping that the team has some solid info to justify the release. This might turn ugly.

No big deal, this kind of shite happens all the time.
