re: Beware: Speed Trap on the Atchafalaya Bridge

7 cops waiting off the bridge on the side of the road, with an airplane clocking every single driver, and phoning in all speeders is not just "running the radar"...They know people speed on that bridge and they knew they could get some catches this way.

So what's the problem with that? It's completely well-known that that stretch of I10 is 60 mph, and that they run radar on it almost constantly. How is that a speed trap?

Exactly. Running radar is one thing. But for a cop to lay in waiting where there is a sudden drop in the speed limit, is what you call a speed trap.

The towns of Washington, Maurice, and Florien (near Toledo Bend) wrote the book on this.

Who can effectively say that either 1) There was actually a plane that clocked you going a certain speed 2) that the radar effectively got your car specifically 3) that their equipment has zero malfunctions or no margin of error 4) that the ticket issuing officer pulled over the correct car that was speeding.

What I'm getting at here is that being nabbed by an officer who is clocking you in person and gets you for speeding...a secret eye in the sky is another thing

Speed limit should be 80 on there. You are dying anyway if you wreck at 60 or 80.

You seem well versed in traffic studies. I hear DPS is looking for a new chief. You should think about it.

It's a classic stretch of road similar to the spillway in that if you try to do the right thing and drive around 65 or so...a-holes will inevitably tailgate you or flash their lights as if you are holding up the entire interstate

left lane or right lane, it doesn't matter these a-holes do not subscribe to lane philosophy

Of course it's not the same. But it's not a speed trap though...that's all I'm saying.

There are stretches of highway (notoriously in Central LA) where the speed limit goes from 65 to 45 within like a couple hundred feet (I'm looking at you, Krotz Springs). I could see a cop sitting on the 45 MPH sign running radar as being labeled a speed trap. But catching speeders on the Atchafalaya Basin (using cars, planes, whatever)? Nah.

re: Beware: Speed Trap on the Atchafalaya Bridge

I travel Lafayette to BR and back daily. They usually do it on the East Bound end of the bridge, but every once in a while they do it on the West End before Henderson. Today they did it on BOTH ends, which is rare!

They do it roughly 7 to 8 days per month. I got stopped doing 74 in a 60 the first week they started doing it heavy a few years back. I had to go to court 2 times before they agreed to reduce it to a non moving violation.

There are 2 lines on the shoulder and they measure the time from line A to line B, plug the time into their formula and it tells them your speed. It's almost dead accurate, as I can attest!

How is it a waste? If it was not effective then I would say it was, but it seems to be effective.

Speaking of waste...frick the Henderson PD.
I've seen those cunts almost cause wrecks pulling people over. AND, one of them gave me a ticket and made up some astronomical number when I was doing 61 coming off of the bridge.

I won't do any business in Henderson ever again. A$$holes!

so he pulled you over for going 61 in a 60....and then proceeded to exaggerate the speed for the ticket?? sounds fishy...

re: Beware: Speed Trap on the Atchafalaya Bridge

The state police stopped shooting radar for around 6 mths on elevated roadways to due a few officer injuries and deaths. It wasn't surprising that they were getting hurt because they would nearly cause wrecks trying to pull out to catch someone. Not to mention there's virtually no shoulder and these asshats drive in reverse down it after making a stop in order to get back in position.

using airplane radars to nab people

No... they paint 2 big stripes on the side of the road and measure the time it takes your car to travel the distance from one stripe to the next. Then convert into speed. Then the plane radios the troopper in the car up ahead and presto, ticket!

Yes. I drive a Honda Civic with digital speedometer and I drive that route 5-6 times per week. I know to slow down at the end and I always do.

He even admitted to me that he wasn't sure if it was me or the guy in front of me speeding, and STILL gave me a ticket.

I called in and complained and at least got it reduced to a non moving. But I still had to pay or fight it in court. Time is $, so I paid it.

The Henderson PD is shady. They have been investigated a few times recently.

That is an extremely dangerous stretch of highway, and people were getting killed on almost weekly at one point (circa late 90s). It's just the fact that it's practically a fricking luge course with the lack of horizontal clearance on either side. It's a terrible, terrible design. The fact that there are no exits means that stalled vehicles have to squeeze onto that itty-bitty shoulder. I once knew a girl who did exactly that and was killed by a passing car when she got out.

It's an excruciating drive along that stretch of I-10 for sure, but the speed limit reduction is completely necessary.

I heard a poor bastard had to take a dump and tried to drop one off the bridge. He fell. I always wondered if this was some myth or not?

Damn. Wouldn't be surprised. If you pass the first exit at the welcome center and have one knocking on the door, you're pretty much effed.
