The "turning 5k into 10k" thread got me thinking about this type of side venture.

What opportunities have you explored in the past that involved purchasing items for the sole sake of selling them at a higher price, and by what means? Mine has been tickets (jumping quickly on high-end concerts/sporting events) through retail purchase and then selling on eBay, but I haven't done it many times.

Thoughts on some transactions that do not involve too much headache, or those that do but tend to have the highest markup on re-sale?

You need to find something that you know more about than most people, I know a guy who makes a killing flipping musical instruments. You can make money flipping random crap, but you'll have to be patient and put in more work.

I did it with football tickets. I bought an allotment early on in the season to a big game, and proceeded to make $10 extra per ticket. It was a very small profit for what I truly wanted. The tickets were at the very top of Bryant Denny stadium, which I would never wish those seats upon anyone ever. Emotion won over me

buy stuff on clearance.

Back when Academy started their online shopping site, they were putting almost everything at clearance prices. I'm talking Nike tights, compression shorts, shorts...everything was from $0.88 to $2.88. I bought everything in sight, nearly their entire inventory and proceeded to flip most of them on eBay, averaging a sell price of around $19.99.

My biggest score from Academy was some Mueller Knee Braces which were on clearance for $0.88 a piece. This must have been a pricing error because everywhere else that I saw still had it priced at around $32.99.

So, I sold each one (around 15-20 or so) for at least $29.99 with $3 shipping.

I'd say I made out pretty well on those items and they paid for some LSU tickets that I wanted.

I bought a motorcycle basically brand new from someone who rode it home, then got scared of it. I have $3800 in it and have put 800 miles on it over 3 months, and am about to sell it for $5300.

If you can recognize a good deal, you can do this fairly easily. A friend and I are gonna start doing it every time we see a good one.

My friend bought 53 tickets to the UT vs ole miss game for about 3500 and is trying to flip them. If we're both undefeated $$$$ if we're not, not so much.

When I moved up here to DC I joined the Texas State Society (I actually went to school at UT-Austin but grew up in BR). As a member of the Society I was able to get tickets to their Inauguration Ball in 2004 for about $50. Sold on eBay for $3000.

I sold bull penis on ebay for about a year. Buy in bulk and sell in smaller portions. I would double my investment each time. For some reason, one day the cost shot up and it was no longer profitable. I probably made 7k that year. If you are confused, I am talking about bully sticks.

I bought some music festival tickets on "pre-sale" a few months back and was able to unload them for a little over 2x my purchase price a few days before the festival on craigslist when my plans changed. I probably could have gotten more if I'd listed them higher... I had people emailing within 30 minutes of putting up the listing. If you can get tickets relatively cheap, I think that'd be an easy demographic to take advantage of. They were going for even more on the big sites like stubhub, but I'd imagine that's to account for all the service charges.

I think that someone could make a living off buying/selling tickets if they tried hard enough...

Here in Nashville a musician goes broke every day. They end up needing fast $, Craigslist beats pawn shops every time. When the market was slow I was clearing $1200-$2000 a month buying on Craigslist and selling on eBay. Probably still easy to do if I had the time to invest

As I mentioned in the $5k to $10k thread, one of my 7on/7off workers flips wrecked motorcycle parts and unclaimed cars. He strips all of the motorcycles down to parts, list them on ebay the day before he comes back to work, and the auctions end his last day of work. He spends his first day off shipping parts. I think he makes a nice little profit on the side, and the best part is that it is all cash. He also has an uncle or friend (I forget) that owns a wrecker/body shop. After cars go unclaimed, he picks them up for say $2000 and only tries to make roughly +/- $1000 on each. He usually post pics on Facebook, and sometimes has them sold by the time he gets home. He hustles really hard.

I was about to say this. I live close to MusicRow and it is outrageous how many STUDIO's are concentrated there. I actually know a musician that did exactly what you are describing, so maybe you profited from him haha.
