Active Gold accounts are a good indicator of unique users.
Exactly and this was Cliffy B (formerly of Epic Games) tweeting about it and outside of Bulletstorm, his recent games have all been Xbox exclusives.

Correct but it is holding the publishers back from lowering their prices too soon because they have to max out first party sales as much as they can due to what they lose on used games.
Even digital, PSN+, and everything you can think of, when a game on console goes on sale it is still more expensive than it is or has been on PC.
A few factors play into that but not nearly as much as used games do.
One Dev just said last night that "He has seen the number of unique gamertags vs the number of actual new games sold and it isn't good"
Publishers keep track of this and tons of other stats to determine what they can and can't afford to do. Use games will kill consoles from ever having truly massive digital sales like you find on Steam and PC in general.
PS1 games are a bad example to use because you are talking about games that are at the very least 13 years old. That's more along the lines of milking that cow that has been paid off for years a few last times before she dies.
Well you completely changed the subject, so I'm just going to say that the dumbest response a publisher/developer can have to used games is to make new games more expensive.

Those of you who were upset about the loss of family sharing, it looks like it was just a glorified demo play mode.
quote:
First is family sharing, this feature is near and dear to me and I truly felt it would have helped the industry grow and make both gamers and developers happy. The premise is simple and elegant, when you buy your games for Xbox One, you can set any of them to be part of your shared library. Anyone who you deem to be family had access to these games regardless of where they are in the world. There was never any catch to that, they didn't have to share the same billing address or physical address it could be anyone. When your family member accesses any of your games, they're placed into a special demo mode. This demo mode in most cases would be the full game with a 15-45 minute timer and in some cases an hour. This allowed the person to play the game, get familiar with it then make a purchase if they wanted to.

IF this is true.... Not shocked that Microsoft was telling white lies again.

Of course that was their plan though. Doesn't make sense for a developer to lose out on $600+ just because one member of a circle buys the game. Especially if they are so damaged by used game market to begin with

I do like the idea of more games getting exposure, but they pretty much told us we can share games with up to ten people without mentioning that it was only going to be a timed demo.

Ha they did a lot of mentioning but not explaining. Good god the 1 time trade for used game thing was massively confusing. As was how the kinect affected the functionality of the Xbox. As was the online check in from your console as opposed to a friends console with your game. Like I've said, their pr team and marketing pulled an epic fail throughout the last month. The xbone drm core could have been great and revolutionary but nobody really knows. It's all speculation from what's been seen in the pc realm, there were no guarantees or absolutes. I don't even think Microsoft really knew what their direction would mean down the line in year 2015 for example

That is par for the course with them.
But most could see through that, no way publishers were going to allow that.

I tend to agree with you there. First and formost I think they forgot its a gaming system and being able to share a game or but it used on facebook is a big deal and part of the experience. One reason I dont play PC much if ever is because I cannot really borrow a game from a buddy and try it out. I know I could probably play a demo or something but I just dont do that.

IMO, it was to quell the recent bad PR.

Ha hell no. Because if that was the case you'd have to believe they would have dedicated a whole 15 min Slot at e3 where 4 dorks are on stage all complaining about how they didn't have the new COD and how their local store closed 15 min ago. Then the lights pan to little 10 year old Scotty saying one of them could play it while he goes to sleep since he has school tomorrow, whoever wins the dance off kinect 2.0 style gets to play it. They all rejoice and a dance off commences

Another thing about all of this is going to game stop and looking at used games with my kids is a big deal. I usually keep the few games I buy for sentamental value but all of my kids games are used for a month or two and then traded in. This would have killed all of that. Not cool.
Now that they have done a 180 on this I think the XBOX 180 is back in the game.

And see BECAUSE you make $15 back on a $60 game it at least gets you in the door to go buy a NEW game. People just ignore the fact that the money from selling games is coming back into the ecosystem n the Form of the purchase of a developers new release.
And whose to say Microsoft was going to 100% replicate steams model where discounted bundles were offered because of no used game market? They would had and could have done whatever the hell they wanted to, their version of a sale right now is 3 year old games for 15% off through on demand.

You're assuming that person is going to even buy a new game. I could buy used, rent, and borrow never giving a single dime back to the actual people who make the games.

We'll never know. That's where they were trying to go.

In a marketplace where used games exist.
