I think that is the case with a lot of athletes. Maybe the athletes have some perspective on how blessed they are.

I find Nadal's little ticks kind of annoying, but he has always been a class act.

Both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have way way better perspectives on their careers than their fans do. Like several orders of magnitude better.

While I can easily admit that he is an all-time great, this is why I will never be a Rafa fan. So of his last 9 slam losses, 6 have been blamed on injury. I won't question the legitimacy of these injuries, but I'm just sick and tired of having to about his knees (or his hamstring, or his abs or his whatever) after every damn loss on the big stage.

Betting on the first round in a tennis tournament is stupid. I know this, but I'm sort of a degenerate I guess and so I do it anyway, but the second round is where you make your money.

And there are no fancy algorithms here, ladies and gentlemen. You just look at the first round scores. Who barely got by? Fade them or lay off them. Who beat the absolute piss out of their first round opponent? Ride them; they're playing well.

The same idea applies in the first round -- which I guess means that betting on first round matches isn't always stupid -- with respect to the guys who had to make it through qualies. You just look back through the qualie draw and you find the one or two or three guys who rolled through without much difficulty, and you take them in the first round of the main draw. Here, it was Kudla and Struff who rolled through qualies without dropping a set and who had lots of 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3 scorelines.

I took both of those guys and they both won. Now this doesn't make me smart or good at gambling, but it might have made me smart and good at gambling if I would have just used the above strategy and nothing more.

But I'll definitely be on the lookout for "hot-hand" plays in the second round.

Seriously

Haters gonna hate. And Roger fans love to hate on Rafa. I don't hate on Roger, as a matter of fact I love watching Roger play. They are totally different styles. Just don't hate Rafa because he usually kicks the shite out of Roger. It is a terrible match up for him. Is only going to get worse now that Roger isn't as consistent.

Enjoy good tennis, admire that we are watching freaks on the court. Yes, these top men are truly freaks of nature. They make the impossible look easy.

People are blaming yesterday's loss on injury ( LINK).

People blamed last year's Wimby loss on injury (he skipped 9 months following the tourney to rest his knee. Also, LINK)

People also blamed the 2009 French Open Loss on injury ( LINK).

Now, while Nadal didn't claim an injury each time, the media did. My original post read:

So, with the 3 clear injuries you have admitted, I have shown that 3 other losses have been blamed on injury (notice my original post did not say that Nadal blamed an injury, just that the losses were blamed on injury...yay for reading comprehension). And I am sick and tired of hearing about his damn injuries.

If you don't want to hear about his injuries, stay off tennis discussion. He is one of the most important figures in tennis, and has had many injuries. It is what it is.

Bobby why are you rooting for Simon- his a charmless frenchy. Lopez all the way. He just beat him at the Eastbourne final a couple of days ago. He just won the first set.

Simon is the only frenchmen who actually plays hard more than 30% of the time.

But, mostly, I had a small wager on him, which I of course lost.

I come to the tennis discussions to read and learn about tennis. And inevitably it seems one of the most frequent post is the Rafa fan blaming his most recent loss on injury rather than poor play (or the strong play of his opponent).

No one in this thread had mentioned that Rafa looked injured in his match until you:

quote:

I don't know how match you guys were watching, but it was clear he was gimpy. Every time he was running forward he was obviously gingerly. Rafa wasn't even trying to stay in the match on the third set. He was clearly hurt. I've watched him for years, and I've never seen him move like that.

It was not clear he was gimpy (at least certainly not through the first two sets). But without fail, a Rafa fan immediately starts posting that the loss was due to injury. In my prior post, I was simply stating that it is frustrating that such a large portion of his fan base (and the media) seem to be unwilling to admit that he gets outplayed and unlike the other members of the big 4, is much more likely to suffer the "fluke" loss (which are looking less flukey by the day).

When Darcis has to field question about Nadal's knees rather than his own play, something is wrong with the narrative.

So let me get this straight. Somebody somewhere on the planet Earth blamed those losses on injuries, and so, as a result, I've just been proven wrong and put in my place?

People are saying your writing lacks clarity.

People are saying, "Yay for words that mean nothing."

I said:

quote:

To which you replied:

quote:

I see nothing in my statement that is not true. The media and Rafa fans commonly blamed those additional losses on his injuries. In several of the cases, Rafa also, directly or indirectly, blamed injury. What is the threshold of evidence I need to present to prove that the narrative was that Rafa lost those matches due to injury? Or do you demand quotes like this:

quote:

Last year I played here because it is a tournament that I love, but I was not ready to play here. That’s the real thing. I play with a [knee injury] from the first day. After Roland Garros, I feel that my knee was not there anymore. … I try my best. I don’t have nothing to learn about that year because it is not an excuse. Rosol played a fantastic fifth set. He probably beats me if I was healthy. … But that experience for me last year was too much. I suffer too much.

LINK

ETA: To expand the quote so you can see Rafa say "He probably beats me if I was healthy." What a bull shite thing to say. Just acknowledge you lost and stop blaming the damn knee.

ChiSaint
You obviously have some anger/issues against Rafa, for some reason. I recognize humans are flawed, and I don't idolized anyone, much less athletes.

I would bet a large sum, you didn't even watch the entire match. You are here defending, and wasting precious time researching and "proving" that Rafa is a jerk somehow? Because you imagine him, and his fans blame all his losses on injuries? That is simply asinine. Rafa has lost many matches healthy, he isn't perfect, he isn't the best that ever lived- that is a stupid title anyway, I've never claimed he is. He is a special player, and if you cannot bring yourself to admire brilliance on it's own merits, then you are truly not a fan of the game of tennis.

I'm kind of tired of the topic. It goes both ways. People whining about Rafa's fans "blaming" his loses on injuries is truly tiresome. Nobody who has ever had to deal on a personal level have ever said he was a bad loser or a whiner. Never mind that all humans look for explanations for their failures. Djokovic blamed a dry court for his failure- he is human. To each his own.

If you are sick of Rafa's fans, stop trying to convince them that you are right. I know I'm never going to convince you of what you don't believe in. I know this post is a waste of time, but I'm not going to WHINE ABOUT IT.

Just saying.

Isner retires with a left knee injury and Darcis is tweeting that he can't play because of arm issues. Sigh

What a shiteshow already today. Azarenka withdrew, too. Hewitt is down a couple sets. Federer might have some trouble if he plays Janowicz, but otherwise it looks like a cakewalk to the semis.

Do you think it's bull shite when a guy says he lost because his opponent got lucky? Because I can name a guy that's gone down that road before. You may have even heard of him.

50 Isner at -500 push
40 Janowicz at -135 chicken dinner

70 Monaco at -350
60 Paire at -350
80 Cilic at -1000
25 Murray at -5000

If Murray or Cilic were to get hurt and have to retire, I would be fuhuucked.
