Yep, and it has me reconsidering making the jump to IB-E in september. I could wait another year or year and a half and build something new -- caselabs case, new 1200w PSU, socket 2011-3, Haswell-E, DDR4, and probably some 8000-series Radeon.
Might not be a wise use of my money now to buy into a socket with a year of life left in it. I have no doubt my 2600k @ 4.8GHz will be just fine until then.

PC gaming is so fricking over my head.
For the first time I'm actually interested though. I'll probably end up with a nice gaming PC in the next few years as I learn more about them.
ETA: I happen to like the Alienware computers. Does that make me the counterpart to Tapout clothing consumers?

I want to refresh some parts on my build in the next 6 months or so. This could be worth checking out. I'm primarily looking at a new CPU and then the necessary mods to accommodate that. I'm definitely behind the times in that department.

I'm interested to see the difference between ddr4 and ddr3 for ram. I doubt it makes any difference for gaming since gpu's have their own memory.

Some games are very CPU heavy though.

yes.
Building is ideal because its so my cheaper and you actually get to learn some things.

True but not many. Of course that may change with the technology. They may begin programming games to use it if it's that much better.

it will be interesting to see how the integrate the dance pad with the PC.

This, so much.
It's very addicting once you get into it. Even after you build your PC, you find new little things you want to add to it. It's really a lot of fun.
Kind of like buying a stock car from Ford, versus having the aptitude to build your own with all of your own customized parts for what you want your build to specifically do.

As far as I know, Alienware doesn't make bad computers, but they are high-end gaming machines that appear to have a massive profit margin. They also charge obscene amounts for CPU upgrades and overclocking. For example, in their base Aurora model, you get the i7-3820 by default with an overclock to 4.1GHz. For $100 more, they'll overclock it to 4.2...
Or, if you want the 3930k with a 3.9GHz clock, you can pay another $500, or $600 for 4.1Ghz. These overclocks are not significant.
I just randomly configured an alienware on Dell's website, which totaled $3549. I did the same thing on PCPartPicker (and I actually was overgenerous with part selection -- lower CAS ram, nicer case, likely a much better PSU and motherboard, etc), and I still came in at just under $2700, putting no real thought into price/performance optimization. I also added a corsair H100i.

The problem with alienware is even if you are richer than god and can afford one with no sweat, it's still a dumb decision to buy one.
They will still cut corners on certain parts and they will load stupid unecessary programs on the OS.
Their case is a good example. It has that distinct alienware look but for air flow and space I can probably link 100 cases that are better than theirs.
So your tapout analogy isn't completely accurate. Alienware really gets hated on because they are inferior no matter your income level.

Are there any pre-built machines that general consensus are > Alienware?
As stated, I literally know next to nothing in terms of PC hardware nor do I currently have an extreme desire to learn it.

Short answer: no
Long answer: they will almost always put in a generic motherboard, memory, and power supply, in a generic case.
I know complete retards that have built their own computers after watching the newegg.com series on how to build them. There isn't much of anything to learn, trust me.

Actually, there are pre-built machines that are better than Alienware, but they come from places like iBuyPower -- they use the same components you'd get on Newegg. They build good PCs, but they have to make a profit. Kind of like buying furniture or something from a store. You can assemble it yourself, or pay the store extra to assemble it for you.
Except putting together shitty particle board furniture isn't fun and addicting.
You live in Baton Rouge? I'll build you one for free. (you buy the parts, obviously). Serious offer. I used to do it for money, now I do it for fun. Give me a budget and what you expect the PC to be able to handle, and I'll tell you what to buy. I'll put the thing together right in front of you, show you how simple it can be, install a free fully working copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, and you'll wonder why you even considered buying prebuilt.

Awesome offer, honestly, but I live in Columbus and don't plan on getting into PC gaming for another year or two. Figure by then I may be ready to step away from the XB1(and save up a bit of money for a good PC).

Step away from the xbox1 now and build, you won't regret it.

That's cool. Should've realized you weren't in BR from the name, but for a second I forgot who I was addressing (was looking at the previous poster's location since I was replying to him).
I'd just nix the XB1 and use that money, plus what you'd be spending on $60 XB1 games, and just build now.
