Youngest just turned 2. That's a great idea though, I'll tell her to look into it.

South, is it possible for her to home school the 3 older children if push came to shove? I understand how you feel ... my husband feels the same way although we've never been tested. I work a contract position as a registered dietitian for a nursing home. Husband says if I want to quit then quit ... if I want to work then work.

My kids are in catholic school and it would be hard to give up but yes, we're in an icky school district for my children's ages (elem would have been ok).

Just a thought -- and I REALLY feel like you should investigate the online teaching thing. Or if your hours allow it, perhaps she could teach night classes at a community college/college near you??

If she's home already with your youngest 2, maybe she could keep 2 other children? Home daycare here is $15 per day ... $75 per week per kid so 2 kids = $150 per week x 4 weeks. Just a last thought.

Best of luck ... hope things look up soon.

Yes it is possible, it's just that they are straight a students and thriving in the Catholic school they are in. Homeschooling is on the table but I've just seen too many kids that were home schooled turn out like socially awkward zombies.

In short I guess I want to have my cake and eat it to but in the end it's all in God's hands.

The fact that I have 5 healthy, beautiful children makes me a VERY wealthy man.

And it's a blessing truly that you see it that way.

FWIW, I'm south of Lafayette and there is a wonderful home school organization/group here that meets with the Lafayette groups from what I'm told. Many of them seem "very normal" and not awkward. My son had a classmate join his class after being home schooled and did just fine.

Again, best of luck ... look into the online class teaching!!! Or a quick thought .. could she learn to do taxes? I know it's seasonal but it is a thought.

Just a thought, since your kids are in Catholic school...

Have you asked about any of the tuition assistance options they have available? Both of my kids are in Catholic school, and I know that some of the additional money we donate each year covers just that.

I would think you and your wife could go in and explain the financial situation. Discuss how diligent you have been with your family finances, but you are still facing this tough financial tradeoff.

Most importantly, mention that your wife would be interested in helping out with the school or becoming a part-time staffer. Not only would this provide additional income, but many schools have a tuition discount for faculty and staff. Also, this would put you in prime position for tuition assistance.

The bottom line is that your wife helping out at the school could be far more valuable than the hourly rate alone. Be prepared to mention her skills and interests and where she can be of greatest benefit to the school. It's worth a shot.

Perfect. Did you ask about tuition assistance? Speaking as somebody who donates to these funds, you should feel free to ask with a clean conscience. Especially if you are parishioners, you seem like perfect candidates.

She can get a job as a part-time teller at a bank. Heck, banks hire loan officers on a part-time basis as well.

Tutoring is an excellent idea. It's cash and she can make her own hours. She can even have the children that she tutors come to her own home.

And not just college kids. High school kids all the way down to kindergarten. I know a few teachers who did this after school and during the summer and the cash they brought in was more than their regular salary.

It's good that you haven't ruled it out. My wife home schools our two elementary aged kids and is involved with a couple of local groups that do meet ups, home school PE/field days, field trips, etc.

There are definitely some socially awkward kids but that's more a symptom of the parents and not the homeschooling itself. Between the groups that my wife is in there is always some event to go to. It takes some networking effort but she can get them into something everyday if she really wants to.

Don't just look at the school. Talk to the church affiliated with the school. They are always looking for help. Some Diocese will work out a work plan. Your wife works so many hours and they deduct so much from tuition.

Tutoring is the best idea on here - my physics teacher in HS charged me 25 per hour and it was cheap

I know a lady who was certified as an esthetician or massage therapist and offered manicures, massages, facials, and other beauty treatments at home.

Also: notary - no clue how it works but I know people do it on the side

Good luck from someone who understands the importance of private education, look into that tuition reduction

Your wife should tutor college students. They can most likely have time available during the day when all of your kids are at school.

Look at hidden costs like AC temperature, water usage, household energy usage, cable, internet, kids' clothes, your clothes, more and more. All consumables you buy may have some sort of cheap to make replacement. Maybe she can get into extreme couponing?

And then, after all that, get a vasectomy. Seriously, if you cannot make ends meet now, just think about when they all go to college.

Online tutoring. Set your own hours, starting pay is roughly $9.50 but I have seen it up to $15 an hour.

Websites will pay you 1/2 if you make yourself "available" and then once you enter a online tutor session you can make the full amount per hour.

Set your own hours; demand is all hours albeit higher at times.

Most private schools have some sort of tuition assistance. I know mine had a scholarship program and it sounds like your kids are pretty smart. Do what Linkovich said and go talk to the church if the school cant help you. Don't be too proud to ask for help.

You could look into her teaching at a church preschool/Mother's Day Out program. My wife did this (3 kids at home). Benefits: Hours typically 9-2, no work after clock-out, your smaller kids may be able to go with cheap tuition (eliminating need for babysitting/daycare). These programs are often only 2-3 days per week.

Only 8-15$ per hour, but it's something. The tutoring idea is also great, you could do the above and tutor on the off days.
