But how would make you happy then? There is no one out there that is an exciting pick.

Who is there that is so much better and a no brainer pick this year?

That's my point. Who knows? Teams haven't even begun to work out players.

What if Porter, Oladipo, McClemore, Noel drop? You're telling me we don't consider those guys because we like Saric?

What if Monty falls for a guy like Shabazz during workouts? Caldwell Pope? Goebert?

I disagree. I think Burke/McCollum would be exciting to see if they could take over for GV. I think Shabazz/Porter would immediately start and have an impact. I'm intrigued by Len.

Consider sure, but they are not anything that would make me scramble to get the pick in because they fell. I really think all four will likely be role players in the league. Of course, I may be wrong, but nothing about them screams star.

I like Saric too. That's a good piece by double M. I wouldn't mind him. I don't think he's the shoe in pick at this point, though

I guess what I am saying is that there are about ten top prospects in the draft that all are about the same. None of them look as though they will offer immediate impact to their team. So why not go with the guy that you can stash and save money to spend on veteran FA. Not to mention he is the one with the most unique skill set, as well as the one who best fits what you are trying to build.

Me either. I just think it would be a very good way to go.

Agreed. There has to be a time where you show some serious improvement and commitment to win for a variety of reasons. You want to establish yourself as a contender for FA, put butts in the seats, etc. If they draft Saric, I'll be disappointed.

Its unlikely a rookie in this draft that will be available at 6 will make us that much better immediately.

Hey you are free to disagree. I most definitely could be dead wrong. I just don't see anyone in the draft that will excite. I think Burke is the result of a great Tourney run. We have seen those not pan out before. I really like CJ, but he is very much an unknown. Shabazz was very unimpressive at UCLA. Porter I like, but I think will be somewhere between Tayshun Prince and Darius Miles. Len I just am not sold on and the foot injury worries me.

I dont believe this. I know MM cited last years rookie class' PER but that is pretty misleading. Guys like Harkless, Valunciunas, Barnes and Henson turned it on when they got minutes. And the others, while not having a great PER, still contributed in a positive way.

10-12 per class guys usually play 20+minutes and contribute as a rookie. No reason we couldn't get one at 6. If rookies were generally worthless everyone would be grabbing internationals

What i am confused about is that this is a make or break year for monty and dell and they want to draft a guy who is more than likely not going to play this season. If we have another bad year, these two ( or at least monty) will be gone.
This.

The reason is Monty and Dell aren't trading veterans just to open up minutes for a rookie again. Shabazz is probably the only player that's both good enough to have an immediate impact and fits a very open hole on the roster (wing scoring) without an established veteran in front of him. The problem with Shabazz is like the OP said, he's a love him or hate him prospect. Sure Burke/McCollum would probably be better than Vasquez in the long run, but as rookies they'd be a marginal upgrade at best. I believe in taking BPA, but the scope of this conversation is would anyone have significantly more of an instant impact than Saric and outside of Shabazz I think the answer is no barring trade or injury.

I agree and I don't really want them to trade a vet to open up a spot. That would put us back further. I also agree about Shabazz as I think he would be the guy who could help us the most immediately.

But i also believe one of the PGs, SGs, or Cs could log 20 minutes coming off the bench and play a valuable role on an improved team. They may not have a great PER but they would be contributing and building towards a better future

Going to suck when EG gets hurt again and we are watching McCullom tear it up at the 2 in Minny or Portland.

Not unless a trade or injury occurs. I would project that Vasquez/Gordon/Rivers are going to be getting at least 84 of the 96 minutes available at both guard positions. At the Center spot there aren't enough big minutes available for a fair distribution between Davis/Anderson/Smith/Lopez, no way a rookie gets 20 minutes.

I almost put an * next to Gordon , but still, guard and big are pretty deep positions even if they're deep with mediocrity. Remember what Monty said about need vs. BPA, not that I agree with it

quote:

``We’re at a point now where we go by need and we’re trying to fulfill those needs as opposed to just taking best talent,’’ Williams said. ``Now if the need is gone, then you take the best player. I think it’s a little different than last year. Anthony was the consensus No. 1, so that was an easy one.’’

It was a pretty good piece.

quote:

Evaluate the player, not the country he is from. And by the way, when you really research the regions, you will see that the different regions produce vastly different players. The Croatian League and Adriatic League produces guys more like Pekovic, not Bargnani.

still need to know more about the league he is playing in

the biggest thing as with all overseas players is how he translates to the competition change, and as of now, doesnt look like he is playing against much competition.

So in order to "EVALUATE THE PLAYER!!!!" you must know who he is playing against .

A guy like Robbie Hummel would look like a great, toolsy player in that league. Doesn't mean he is ready for the NBA>

like who else?

Goran Dragic is the only other guy I can think of for sure (Toni Kukoc as well, maybe?).

I do know that those leagues are generally considered pretty competitive, though. He did just turn 19 very recently and has now been playing against grown men for a few years.

re: Everything You Need to Know About Dario Saric

im just playing devil's advocate.

but thats always the argument. "He;s only 19 and playing against grown men!"

And the league can be competitive, but it doesn't mean it has NBA caliber players there.

DJ Strawberry played well, but cant get an NBA sniff ?
