Johnny Depp should have won an Oscar for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape."

For acting as if Juliette Lewis was attractive.
That's all.
That's all.

I seriously think there were something like 3 Oscar worthy acts in that movie.
Johnny, Leo and the fat lady.
Johnny, Leo and the fat lady.

For what? Acting like a morbidly obese lady that couldn't move? It looked like she had lots of practice for that part.

There's more to an Oscar than just acting skills. She came out of nowhere (granted there aren't tons of roles for that type of character) and was brave enough to let herself be that character. She was simple and real and you genuinely managed to care about her, despite her looks and shortfalls. She was an amazing character and managed to be so damned believable. Just looking the part isn't enough. I look the part for Rudy or Samwise or Vincent Vega or some other characters that kind of have that look, but it doesn't mean I could actually pull off the role.
She was brilliant.

I never watched it until a couple years ago because I just didn't think it would be my type of story and I generally think Johnny Depp's career peaked with 21 Jump Street, but this movie just completely blew me away. There were moments when I may or may not have had human-like feelings provoked by what I was viewing.

The scene where the husband is having a meltdown in the front yard, trying to get the kids to swim in the pool, and yelling "I'm doing the best I can here!" was hard to watch.
