Not the point of the thread at all, but this thread sucks anyway, so... I still think it should be "are" because it's a nickname, while city/school names are singular, but interesting premise. One mistake that's constantly made though is when "their" is used instead of "its" for singular team names. For example, "Miami ran their offense quickly" is incorrect. Should be "Miami ran its offense quickly." That's one mistake that's made constantly.
