Negotiating Vehicle price - is my calculation/offer correct?

Invoice is 20k plus the destination fee of $900 so $20900
I am aware that there is a rebate of $1500. I countered their original price of $21700 with a walkout price of $19800.00
Am I off because the dealer came back "shocked"?
Btw, I'm negotiating over the internet/email so I don't have to do the whole high pressured sales thing at the dealer.

Depends how much trouble they'll have moving the vehicle otherwise
Some dealers don't sell certain models at invoice I'm sure
Eta: you won't always get the best deals over the Internet and phone, they haven't invested much time into you as a customer so you aren't a big loss

I would have offered $19,600.

It's a transit connect.
They have trouble moving new ones but no trouble moving used ones.
I'm looking at a new one.

$19,800 seems like a more than fair offer to me.
Btw, I bought my last car after doing all negotiating through email. I found it a much easier way to get the deal done and didn't have to worry about the different sales tactics. I basically told them, this is my offer, take it or leave it. They took it. I was buying a truck though and they tend to deal more on those.

I think we are forgetting TTL if you are looking for a walk out price. That would eat through that rebate (i.e. walkout around $21,000 leaving little room for dealer profit).

What kind of vehicle is this? Reason I ask is because there is ALOT more negotiating room on american vehicles than imported vehicles.
Also was the 21700 an internet price or a regularly advertised price? If its an internet price there isnt very much room because those prices are set low to get you in the dealership for a quick sale.
Lastly, you mentioned a rebate. Are you going to do any type of special financing offer with them? Because you either get the rebate and whatever interest rate you qualify for or no rebate and the super low interest rate.
I sold cars many years ago so if you give a little more info I can help out more.

How much wiggle room can I expect to bring a dealership down from the internet price of a Tacoma?

If its new there will only be about a couple grand if that. If you can find the invoice on a new one then a more than fair deal would be 500 over invoice. Thats lets the salesman make about a 100 bucks and the dealership makes their minimum. If its used then there will be probably be around 4-5k from what the list at an what they paid.
Now the more popular colors will go for more because those are easier to sell. Also always buy at the very end of the month because the managers are more willing to negotiate further in order to reach their sales bonuses.

Very true......I was a sales manager at one time
one or two vehicle sales sometimes mean big bucks to managers

Yep, Ford F-150
OP-see if you can find out what their holdback is. Also there is a way you can find out exactly what they paid for the vehicle. I don't remember how though, but it's been mentioned on here before.
