Smoke is actually doing a pretty damn good job building up North Florida. They might get an at large bid this year (Smoke's third season there)

Yep, he's got them at 39-17 (school record for wins) and their RPI is right around #55. If they can beat Florida Gulf Coast, they could get a second bid out of that conference behind Mercer.

agreed. Had no hard feelings towards him for not succeeding, but trying to burn the place down on your way out because you're bitter makes you a piece of shite

I had many friends on the teams in the 80s and some that I have kept in touch with always said that Smoke ran the show at practice. As others said he just wasn't ready to take the reigns from Skip

Lets not also forgot another reason that Smoke was a shoe in to get the job. $$$$$$

I remember alot of talk that Skip was pretty aggresive with his demands that he still get to keep the majority of the baseball camp money even after he left. No coach in their right mind would agree to that.

He had a hell of a team in 2003 and let it fall apart. Then again in 2004. It amazed me how far we could get without even trying sometimes or so it seemed. I used to sit right behind the dugout in the old box and in his last year people were screaming "wake up Smoke" anytime something happened. They guy would never even move in the dugout, for good or bad.

Yup.......blamed everything that happened against us on baseball fortune.

Was fired a year too late IMO.......that super regional at Rice when we failed to score a run was embarassing.

Should we wish for them to come to Alek Box?!

That was truly awful, but I also remember that CWS game in 2004 (SC?) where they used something like 12 pitchers. Absolutely disastrous.

That Rice super regional was Wally Pontiff's last game before he passed away.

I'm confused, how can he be fired a year too late if the Rice Super Regional was his first year as head coach?

I don't understand that one either. Rice was 2002 and I think Wally was maybe the only player to get a hit that weekend. 2002-2004 were very good teams. After that he just quit trying at all.

I believe that losing out to Rice in the regular regional in 2005 was more damning to his tenure.

The CWS game against Fullerton was embarrassing. The score wasn't too terrible, but they just looked world's better than us from coaching to talent. That's when I began to worry about the future
