Short cornerbacks question?
Posted by Tiger F@g on 5/20/13 at 1:07 pm24
I hate to mention this, but can't help myself. Should we be recruiting short corners? Saban will not recruit a corner shorter than 5'11" regardless of rating. DIdn't offer Tre white or Tyran Mathieu because of it.
We have two corners listed as 5'10" in this class not including Jeryl Brazil. Looks like we have a commitment from a 5'9" corner for next year. Our short corners may have trouble with the "basketball" team Texas A&M is assembling at WR.
Thoughts on this anyone?

No. Email your ground-breaking thoughts to the coaching staff immediately!
Clearly they are not doing it right.

I think the corners we go after, although short, are all dynamic athletes.
Thanks for a serious response.
Look at the video featuring a Texas A&M receiver recruit vs. an LSU DB recruit. I'm worried this will happen in goal line situations. I need some reassurance.

It depends on how they are deployed. I agree that diminutive corners are at a disadvantage when they find themselves in one on one coverage on the outside. However, shorter, quicker corners can be very effective in zone schemes, nickel packages, and dime looks. That is typically how they are used in the NFL. For example, Tyrann was a force when he was used in the nickel/dime against spread offenses like Oregon and WVU.

Well there arent really a whole lot of 6'2" guys out there with the speed and hips to play CB at the SEC level so i doubt LSU is just trying to avoid tall CBs

You can be assured that tall or short, good or bad, no matter who they play for they will all get beat at one point or another. That's the life of playing on the island.

Don't you think Saban would have liked someone with Mathieu's ability? I know that Saban has his ideas about minimum requirements in terms of size for each position, but the bottom line is that talent and speed are more important than size at the corner.

Tre White is the same height as Mo Claiborne (5'11) and Robinson is 6'3.

Nothing you said after this mattered. Establishing the pretense of "if Saban doesn't, no one else should" makes me believe anything that follows will be biased in some fashion.

According to lsusports.net, Rickey Jefferson and Tre White are both 5'10".
I've never met either one to verify. Historically, lsusports.net gives all players and inch when compared to the NFL combine heights, so I'm concerned.

Fair Enough.. but Saban said he would have recruited him...

Considering our inability to produce All-Americans and 1st round draft choices at that position over the past 4 or 5 years, you might be on to something Einstein.

Not really.

If our corners are good, that's all that should matter.
