Only one time have I sent back a dish because I didn't like it, and I only did so because it was a very nice restaurant and the 4 of us had spent a lot of money on drinks and cocktails. In the grand scheme of things, the cost of my meal wasn't a big deal to them. But only in that type of circumstance would I do that. I rarely even send back dishes that were not prepared to standards, unless it's an egregious frickup or it's at a restaurant with a chef.

One exception: I will always send back an overcooked steak.

Exactly, and you know, I've worked with the public almost all of my adult life, and may I say that often times, the customer is an idiot. There are clearly instances where the customer is being taken or has a legitimate gripe, but this bending over and kissing arse when you know damn well they are wrong doesn't really serve anyone.

When I hear of restaurants and businesses in general doing that to appease an arse who is way off base, I really want to ask them... Is that really the customer base you're shooting for as a repeat customer or worse still, a regular?

Right. What does this kowtow get society? It only further emphasized a lack of accountability. If a server would say, "I'm sorry you don't like what you ordered, you can order something else." Some people need a kick in the arse!! Reality is in pretty short supply these days.

I rarely see anything even approaching this phenomenon happen in the restaurants I frequent.

I know. a-hole. But it's true.

I don't see it happen either. That doesn't take away the point that it happens on a large scale. I avoid places where this phenomenon would likely occur. I don't have to see problems to know they exist, and for that fact to make me loathe people who take advantage of others.

It should do what it can to make the customer happy. With that being said, if the customer eats more than half of the order, he/she evidently wasn't bothered a whole lot from it.

If I took a bite of something and it wasn't cooked correctly, it tasted bad, whatever, I'd let the server know. I sure wouldn't grin and bear it.

Exactly. It's pretty easy to distinguish from someone with a legitimate gripe vs. someone trying to get a free meal. The free meal people get little to no sympathy from me.

Someone who is polite and obviously just disappointed will get a big effort from me to make it right. I find that when I apologize profusely and go above and beyond for someone, I get tipped well AND I still leave a good taste in their mouth about the experience.

After awhile it becomes almost second nature to sniff out someone who is ripping you off.

My wife and I order stuff we don't like all of the time, you have to try new things...

Last one was a fried tofu dish in some sort of brothy sauce, at a Thai/sushi joint. I shouldn't even have taken the second bite, the texture was horrible to me.

I'd never think in a million years to ask for it to be free. I did however ask them to take that vile dish from our table.

When I had my own restaurant this happened to me also (maybe once to a few times a month). People would try to get refunds on takeout when they would bring nothing back. Some even told me it was so bad that they threw it away or that it repulsed them so bad they had to get rid of it.

Meanwhile, I just sold 40+ plate lunches of the same exact thing and never had any complaints on the rest of them.

People can be nuts too. I had an older woman buy boiled crabs once. She didn't want any black on the crabs. Well all crabs have coloration on the bottom of them due to the water. First I let her look at a few crabs and she bought a dozen. About 45min to an hour later I see this woman speeding into the parking lot. She was irate. She came in and bitched about having black on the crabs and demanded a refund. She was pretty nasty so I just gave her the money back. Sometimes it is just better to get people like that out of your place.

Live crawfish can be tough also. I used to get lots of calls on live crawfish having deads. Some would say most of the sack is dead or half the sack is dead. I've had some that were legitmate. It is a live product after all. And I had some I knew were BS. If I bought 25 sacks from someone and I went through 10-15 of them to boil and never had any problems. Chances are the other sacks are good also. When I had complaints, I would ask them to bring back the crawfish and I would swap them out. 4 out of 5 times I would never see these people come back.

Had something happen similar to these situations last night. We were eating at a certain Midcity restaurant and started with a large charcuterie plate. Everything was fine until they came out with the pork shoulder entree that we split. We each took one bite and it was so heavy on the salt that it was inedible. And this coming from two people that enjoy salty food and had no issues with the salt from the charcuterie plate.
Normally I wouldnt say anything but it was obvious we didnt touch the food and I let the waitress know why when she asked. She apologized and took away the plate. Came back with everything on the bill. I simply paid and left without saying a word. Now it really isnt about the money but when you are a fairly new restaurant, you have to think more long term. I don't see myself returning anytime soon and I won't be recommending the restaurant to anyone.

In my opinion the question has 2 issues. If it was a question of quality or freshness, it should be removed. Also if its just the worst version of the dish imaginable , also remove it. If you tried something and it just wasn't to your taste liking....that is on you.
