So y'all tell me one good Armisen skit
The Californians was good the first few times it aired. Even then Hader's character was the best.
Now that they've done it every week for 2 years I'm so done with it.

it's more than that. It's topical, timely humor which, to me, means that there's more than one factor at work.
I remember as a kid my parents dying laughing at Murphy, Akroyd, and Murray. I also remember not thinking it was all that funny. Then SNL became relevant to me as Hartman, Nealon and The Church Lady had me rolling off the couch. Then again, going back and watching reruns of the first few seasons, I saw why my parents were laughing, I was at an age to where it was hilarious.
My point is that it's two distinctly cyclical forces at work. Since the humor is usually topical, on one hand you have the comedic talents of the cast. Like a sports team, sometimes they're all rockstars, sometimes you have just a couple all-stars and sometimes, they all suck.
On the other hand, alot about how you perceive SNL as a viewer has to do with how old are you, where are you in your life, etc, etc. Sometimes, it all comes together perfectly and it's hilarious, other times, its a disaster (to me).
On some level, you can somewhat define your generation by which chunk of SNL years were the funniest to you and your friends

I went to NYC a few months back. Ran into a few "Stefon" on the street, just hearing conversations, etc. I get where the stereotype/character came from.
Yeah, it is a NYC thing I

As it is with all former cast members and repeat guest.
Yeah I mean Aykroyd and Martin brought back the "Two Crazy Guys" skit this year. That's a first time 35 year rehash.
Great skit though.

very well put, but I remember being little and laughing to "I'm Gumby Dammit" and "Mr. Robinson's neighborhood".
But I didn't start to get it until about 88, I remember the Dukakis thing.
That's all I remember about Dukakis is SNL skits.

That was an awesome skit. Aykroid, Martin, Timberlake, and Sandberg.
"To recap, they will take you to the mall and bang on your butt. How does that sound?"
"Well, I don't hate it."

I like almost all the cast members throughout the 90s, Norm MacDonald being my favorite. I pretty much quit watching once the last of the 90s cast members started phasing out. Nothing against the next gen cast, that was just my SNL.

He is awesome!! The only positive is that he will put out some movies hopefully.

Funny but not funniest. I do agree that he is one of the funniest on the current cast and this is a huge loss (Stefon, James Carville being two of my faves on update).

I haven't read the thread, but I assume I'm one of the few who can't stand Bill Hader? He seems to be a great writer, but I cringe most times when he's on screen.
Also, feel free to put me on the "frick Fred Armisen" bandwagon.

same, I also stopped watching because I'm not always home on Saturday nights. But now I DVR it every week, so I probably watch now more frequently than ever.
The mid 90's were solid, when you had Farley, Sandler, Hartman, Meyers, and Ferrel, and many others.
I never knew Darrell Hammond was the longest tenured SNR star, but he never got into movies.

I liked him and Samberg in Hot Rod, I thought they did very good.

Its ingrained in the culture and always will be i suspect. the younger generation is watching it.
I have to disagree. I'm 23 and I have a feeling I'm the last generation who ever watches it/will watch it on any kind of regular basis. I'll watch one every once in a blue moon. Used to be a lot more as a teenager. The quality has gone downhill pretty big time now that most of the big names are no longer there.
It's just not "must watch" TV anymore IMO.

He really is awful. I thought of another terrible one. Where he's dressed up as the lady who is the court transcriber. Just a terrible skit all around.
