it is a FACT that LSU was the one and only National Champion in 2003. Some might not like the BCS system but it was the system that was in place.

his is completely irrelevant to the thread but georgia was better than lsu in '07

They were playing better at the end of the year, but the same could be said for 2006 LSU, who probably would've beaten anyone in the country that January. Playoffs taketh and giveth. I don't think that makes them better over the course of the year, but I think both of those teams would've won a playoff.

Should have never been split.

Colorado got the infamous 5th down or it wouldn't have been undefeated.

Cal went 8-6 and lost to Colorado state and Utah. Who cares if they had Rodgers? Rodgers didn't mean jack because cal sucked.

Yep, though had Miami not blown it against BYU they probably would've won the MNC. GT-Colorado would've made for a great game.

Colorado went 11-1-1 (lost to Illinois).

They didn't even go undefeated as it was. They finished 11-1-1. Should have been 10-2-1 and no national championship. GT actually finished undefeated that year with one tie.

I repeat, Nebraska 97 would have beaten Michigan, and it would not have been close.

People underestimated the 97 team simply because they didn't have Tommie Frazier. Well, Scott Frost ran the offense just as efficiently, and was a better passer. Not to mention they still had a dominant O-Line and Ahman Green was unstoppable at RB. To say that Tennessee "laid down" in the bowl game is laughable. Do you really think Peyton Manning "laid down" in his last game at Tennessee? Please remember that Tennessee team won the NC the following year.

So yeah, Nebraska drubbed Manning & Co. 42-17 (one of TN's TDs was a last-minute drive against Nebraska reserves) in the Orange, while meanwhile Michigan struggled to beat Ryan Leaf and the mighty WSU Cougars. 30 more seconds on the clock and Michigan would have lost that game.

I'm willing to overlook a Trojan ignoring that fact. That's understandable.

LSU was the coaches champion. USC was the media champion. And they both have trophies.

It would have a been a game for the ages, though.

True. 1990 was a classic example of the old systems where the two most deserving teams were prevented from playing each other.

Colorado was an awesome team, played a man's schedule and it cost them. They had a loss, a tie, and the 5th down. GT played a very light schedule but went undefeated with a tie.

Nebraska was their common opponent, but for CU it was a hostile rivalry game playing for first place, GT was a meaningless bowl game for NU.

Recap of opponents by end of year rankings:

Colorado
W 20–14 vs. No. 5 Washington
W 10–9  vs. No. 6 Notre Dame (@Orange Bowl)
T 31–31 vs. No 7/8 Tennessee (@Anaheim)
W 29–22 @ No. 11/12 Texas
W 32–23 @ No. 17 Oklahoma
W 27–12 @ No. 17/24 Nebraska
L 23–22 @ No. 24/25 Illinois

Also played:
Stanford W 21–17
at Missouri W 33–31
Iowa State W 28–12
at Kansas W 41–10
Oklahoma St W 41–22
Kansas State W 64–3

Georgia Tech
W 21–19  vs. No. 9 Clemson
W 41–38  @ No. 15/23 Virginia
W 45–21 vs. No. 17/24 Nebraska (@Citrus Bowl)

Other games:
NC State W 21–13
Chattanooga W 44–9
South Carolina W 27–6
at Maryland W 31–3
at North Carolina T 13–13
Duke W 48–31
Virginia Tech W 6–3
at Wake Forest W 42–7
Georgia W 40–23

Colorado's OOC was awesome. I don't think you'll see it ever again, and obviously they only had 7 conference games, but..

Tennesee
Washington
Stanford (meh)
@Illinois
@ Texas

They played the SEC/Sugar Bowl Champs, Pac 10/Rose Bowl Champs, Big 10 Co-Champs, and SWC Champs.

All these split titles...one team won the AP trophy and one team won the Coaches.

1997 - Michigan AP/Nebraska Coaches
1978 - USC Coaches/Alabama AP

2003 - USC AP/LSU Coaches (because that's what you win under the BCS...you get the Coaches vote.)

That's it...a fancy title and money grab to get TV viewers doesn't change history.

Split-title is and always has been based on the two polls...

Same as it ever was fellas.

USC would've annihilated LSU in 03. Mike Williams, Reggie bush, Matt leinart, they'd score 30+...look what they did to a better OU than the one LSU faced in a what was basically a home game

Meh. 2003 OU was touted as one of the greatest teams ever, all year. They were legit. USC was untested. Plus USC 04 was way better than 03

And the next year they kept their heisman quarterback and added Adrian Peterson

'03 was the freshman/sophmore offense of the dynasty with a talented upper-class D. Weakest offense of the 3 years but best D of the 3 years.

'04 had the best balance of great O talent and D talent. Best balance.

'05 had the best offense - mediocre D.
