When fishing new lake, what is your strategy

memorial day weekend myself and the family are going to a small private lake i have never been to before. Stocked with bass and bream from my understanding. What are you guys strategies for fishing a new place for the first time? what lures and techniques do you use with most success? I normally texas rig a watermelon seed worm and try that, but wondering what are some other good ideas for a new hole

I'll usually assess when I get there if I don't have any intel on the place.
If grass is abundant, I'm throwing a frog early and will switch to a watermelon/red or junebug brushhog as the day heats up depending on water color. If there is a lot of wood structure, I'll throw a crankbait or spinnerbait instead.
If nothing is working, a wacky worm or a weightless fluke can usually entice a fish to bite as well.

Top water and work the bank. I usually fish a cove longer than I would anything else. White Fluke Jr and I use the walk the dog method with a few tweaks.

Catch as many as possible in shortest amount of time.

How small and how private?

i look at each type of cover and structure in the lake and assess what stage i think the fish should be in and start there...also try to find out what forage is in the lake and try to imitate that...if its still really tough i'll downsize everything and try something weightless or go with really light line and finesse tactics

I would start on the east end where it is shallowest in the morning. Catch some fish on TW using a buzzbait or a popper. Then work my way along the south bank going west hitting the woody cover. It doesn't appear to have much in the way of emergent vegetation, so I would key in on hard structuce and drops using a tx rigged plastic or a crankbait.

My time-proven strategy to fish a new lake...
Gear:
Chair, rod-n-reel, weight, hook, bobber, worms.
Method:
1. Toss wormed hook on to water
2. Sit in chair
3. Slouch down until comfortable
4. Nap

I hope you don't mean beer. From the Swallow Fork Lake website:

start with topwater.... my personal choice is a super spook jr. work the shallow end but don't discount the levee either.... you'd be surprised how many fish will stack up there in private ponds and lakes. then I'd throw a senko or texas rig of my choice around the trees in the middle section of the lake. I would also maybe bang a deep running crank bait around the middle and see if there is any submerged brush. if so work it over good with the crank or a mop jig.
Don't overlook a small swimbait either. Fish that don't see a lot of lures generally will KILL a swimbait.

Small lake,stocked.......problem solved, throw what you want.

remember too.... it's a pretty small body of water so take your time. With only about 1/2 mile of shoreline you should be able to fish it thoroughly in about 3 hours so don't get in a hurry. pick all the cover apart and let the size of the first few fish you catch dictate what lures you throw. If you hook 2lb plus fish... tie on a jig instead of a texas rigged worm. if they seem small, tie on a baby brush hog or shakey head worm. Have fun and just fish.

Well for salt water, I'm looking first at tide and wind. Then once I get an idea of water depths i look for broken contours of the marsh. Not too hard. Always looking for bait or tailing reds
