The players. They know what they're getting paid to do and the possible consequences of their job going into it.
More pussyfication of America. Take responsibility for your own shite and stop blaming someone else for your problems. Pay your own fricking bills and get your own fricking heath care. It isn't someone else's place to take care of you.

Um, retired NFL players?. . .

Is no one in America responsible for their own personal expenses anymore?

Sure, the same way I feel sorry for my grandfather - a roofer for 40 years, who's undergone 4 knee operations over the past decade. Who was responsible for his medical bills? Him.

ETA: Not a flame. I agree with you. Just making that comparison.

The NFL should be like most employers and offer a package for employees.

a. this policy is horrible in general

b. the NFL and NFLPA collectively bargain for these benefits. if the players don't have insurance, then it is the responsibility of their union for not negotiating for it in their CBA. the NFL bears no obligation for something not collectively bargained for with the union previously

But how long has the NFL had a union? Some of these guys played before union repesentation correct? Also let's say I'm at work and I fall due to heavy seas and a slick deck doing my job and hurt myself bad and let's say the doctor tells me I will have problems the rest if my life. Now I know at my job, just like any other job, there's a chance I might get hurt, but I still do it and do it the best of my ability. Now should I have to pay my medical bills or should the company I work for? If I get hurt and its my fault than I would say it should be me who has to cover my own bills but in a normal or even when you have abnormal days when shite is going bad and get hurt shouldn't the company cover your medical bills?

Who is going to be responsible for my diabetes, carpal tunnel, and poor eye sight from sitting in front of a computer all day at the end of my career?

I believe the NFL should provide a decent insurance policy and the players have the choice to purchase it or not.

They make plenty of money over their careers to be able to afford health insurance. They choose not to use it or buy it knowing the damage they did to their own body then that's on them, not the fans. They could have bought one less car and had their healthcare needs taken care of for life.

I've got no interest in coddling coddled athletes long after they've quit playing.

Especially when they chose to spend their money on bling/cars/sneakers/etc instead.

The players and the NFLPA.

The players weren't forced to play and they get retirement and benefits. Plus they're vested at quicker rate. They know the inherent risks.
