College Basketball rules committee for the life of them can't speed up the game

The NCAA men's basketball rules committee couldn't get enough support to even vote on reducing the 35-second shot clock, but it did take the dramatic step of introducing more replay at the end of regulation and overtime to ensure out-of-bounds and shot-clock violation calls are made correctly

I know there are "fans" of CBB around here who think the NBA sucks, but men's basketball still plays with a 35 second shot clock, as opposed to the international 24 second clock, and the women at 30. There refusal to make changes to their product makes baseball look progressive. It also makes the athletes less prepared for the pros.

I know a lot of people here blame the NBA, but college basketball's decline over the last 15 years has stunted the game's popularity in the US in general.

It's frustrating but some like it as the antidote to one-on-one basketball.

White guys need time to set up their offense.

How could they not get the support to shorten the clock?

I blame Bo Ryan. He is all that is soulless and wrong when it comes to college basketball style of play.

Dishonorable mention goes Ben Howland, Anthony Grant, Trent Johnson, and anyone else that would rather win a game 43-41 instead of 93-89.

I like that. Cuts off a lot of wasted time, but doesn't take it all the way to NBA standards for guys that shouldn't be playing by NBA standards.

Needs to be 24 with an NBA three point line.

That'll make the game better quickly and might incentivize some players to stay an extra year if they're playing basically the same fame as the NBA.

35 second shot clock suuuuuucks.

its also friggin stupid as hell to have the college game be so different rules wise than the NBA.

push out the 3 line, go to a 24 second shot clock, go to 4 quarters (but Euro time length) and boom, more interesting, faster paced game, and for the love of God STOP allowed guys to mug eachother and call the f-ing fouls correctly.

arguing against it by saying it will just force more bad shots is dumb too. The players will learn to adjust and will be better off long term for whatever pro league, domestic or foreign, they go to.

Reduce the shot clock to 30 seconds. Hopefully it would lead to some better offensive production and end these brutal Big 10 60-55 games. Also, do we really need 14 timeouts per half (5 per team + 4 TV timeouts)?

my guess is it would benefit the more talented teams... shorter shot clock = more possessions = more opportunities for the better team to score. There would be less opportunity to 'shorten the game'.

that's pure speculation, though.

Not really a fan of this. It shouldnt be the same as the NBA. Let the 18 year olds develop.

there might be less isolation, but plays break down enough in college basketball. The pressure on the defense to stay committed for 35 seconds does not mean these guys are better at defense on the pro level.

Basketball is a game of pace and points. Why CBB remains stuck in the past is pathetic.

Of course come tourney time (and not a moment before), the love for college basketball will be strong with "hustle" and "passion" being thrown around.

Thank goodness for the NBA playoffs. The best team wins, but you normally see great basketball being played.

BTW, in case you haven't heard, for the first time in playoff history, All Round 2 series are tied at 1-1.

EVERY American sport (college and pro) needs to stop tweaking their rules and adding timeouts and additional time delays just for TV.

It's not like, if they put their feet down on this, networks would stop televising the games.

Having a 24 second shot clock in college would destroy the myth that players in college play significantly better defense than in the NBA.

To me a shorter shot clock would improve the product on the court drastically. It increases offensive production and it mimics the NBA (which is gaining more and more of its popularity back).

With 24 seconds instead of 35, you have more shots, and more offensive possessions. You also eliminate these bs plays that take forever to run, then when they fail, the team with the ball still has 10-15 seconds to run an entire other play. It's way too much time to allow an offense to hold the ball.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that college basketball needs to:

1) lower the shot clock
2) reduce # of team timeouts and limit each team to one timeout in the final minute
