Pest Control Advice Needed

I'm in a new house and the GF wants us to get a pest control company to come out and spray for bugs. I'd just as soon do it myself after getting quotes of $125 every 3 months for some guy to walk around the perimeter spraying something. Am I wrong to consider doing this myself?
What product would you guys recommend for an all around common pest control? BTW, other than a random spider here and there, I haven't seen any bugs in the house. GF is just paranoid
If I do it myself, I'd want something readily available and where I don't have to do mixing of chemicals or anything. Also something that will protect against common insects and bugs, such as roaches, spiders, and anything else.

malathion
Cheaper by the generic name at a farm co-op
Spectricide is the brand at Home Depot that is way more expensive.

Thanks for the link, I think I'll give Ortho Home Defense a try. If we actually had an infestation of some kind, I think I'd go with a professional, but for now I think we'll save the $$$ and see how this goes.
ETA: Where can one buy rat poison? The house has a deck on it and I can't get under the thing, but I have heard a scurry here and there at night coming from under it
I looked at Lowe's and they seem to have these bait things that cost $10 a pop and contain the dead rodent. I don't want to catch it, I just want to kill it. I remember as a kid, rat poison was cheap as crap and my dad would just through it under the house(we lived Uptown in a raised house). I just want old fashioned rat poison to throw under the deck. Probably just a mouse, but I figure you can't go wrong with rat poison.

I suggest using Arrow Pest control. It costs $75 every three months with an initial fee of $20. I can call them to spray anytime I want. Haven't seen a spider since I started using them.

Dcon works. Can buy it pretty much anywhere. It's little pellets that the bastids eat well. Only problem with throwing it under the deck is that other animals will eat it. And it'll kill most small animals. squirrels, rabbits, etc.

Bengal roach spray under the door seals and around the windows fixed all my bug problems from tree roaches, to spiders and silverfish.

I have orkin, dude comes every other month, and sprays and what not. Costs $75 and if I see a living bug in between servicing they come out for free.
I tried doing it all myself, but seemed to still get certain bugs inside like silverfish and random beetles with the occasional roach, so I decided to outsource.
Havent seen a bug in a loooong time.

careful with the Decon if you have pets. Will kill dogs and cats as well(or any mammal)
The ortho home defense works in my experience. Get some of the glue traps as well and set them in corners and behind furniture. These will catch spiders and other insects that the poison is ineffective on.

This is all you need...a little pricey but it goes a long way once mixed with water.

Talstar
Works great for yard and around perimeter of house. Suspend is another chemical in the same family as Talstar. I think its more effective for spiders and termites.

Get some Hi-Yield 38-Plus Insect Control - 38% Permethrin, and spray it around your house and under your deck using a hose end sprayer. Spray it every couple of months and you will not have bugs in your house and your mosquito population will be greatly reduced. It also kills termites if mixed strong enough. I get it at a local feed store in Lafayette. You should be able to get it in a feed store or local hardware store.
