That's how i'd do it. I'd start off with Nano-brewery production first. Once i get a following for the beers, then i'd think about quitting my job and going full production.

hard to find a distributor that will take you on when you produce such small batches. happened to nola when they started out. they had to invest more $ and produce more beer before any distributors would take them on. thats why it would be so great if nanos could use self distribution.

Anyone tried 40 Arpent's stuff?

I'm hearing good things but I'm wondering if the info is biased.

I've only had it more than a year ago now. I need to hit them up though because they've got to be very close to where I work every day. I probably pass by them all the time and don't even know it.

I had some at WYES last year, and I'll be honest, I don't remember a thing about it. That doesn't help you. I'm sorry.

It couldn't have been that old the times I've tried it.

Does it fall off at hour 23 or something?

Maybe you have faulty taste buds?

Ok...

ETA: I guess a lot of other FBDers have faulty taste buds as well.

Mechahopzilla is by far the best La brewed beer that I have had.

I am suprised to hear that they are going to can it. I thought I remember reading that it is not really something that they make much money on because of the complex brewing process, thus it was going to be somewhat seasonal.

Nope.. I'd rather have a Timber Beast(I know it's not LA brewed) than a Mecha. I'll give it another try when it comes out in cans or whatever though.

re: Nice article on LA beer

I think NOLA did it right, and I've given this a ton of thought actually. They realized their market was not...sophisticated...and came out with the blonde and the brown first to get their name out and get a following. And due just as much to variety and word of mouth they achieved that and were able to bring out some stronger beers over time.
Locally, I think they really paved the way for the NOLA market to embrace craft beer on a level that makes it possible to operate an enterprise. NOLA is a liquor town (I know Blossman says otherwise in that article, but he's just marketing), and one that is notoriously stuck in their ways about certain things, but you can see the door has opened now. BTW I had that King Cake Ale at Bugs and Brew and they coated the cup with cinnamon...hoping that's not a sign of what we're looking at here.

Guess its a taste bud thing b/c it's not even my favorite NOLA beer. And with the exception of the Mecha release party at the pub I've exclusive had that beer at the brewery.

this is why taprooms are crucial. I think you can start on a nano level, 50 gallons at a time, and sell it from your taproom, but it will depend heavily on your local market and location.

Farmhouse or something at the brewery?

Farmhouse is pretty damned good. I'd put it up there with one of the best beers made in LA.

I could see that. I much prefer an American style IPA/DIPA than a Belgian style one.

Yep. I'm just damn happy we are able to have debates like this around here. Five years ago, I guess we would have had to fight about wich Abita beer was best in La.
