re: Jindal's School Voucher Plan Ruled Unconstitutional

quote:

As far as what I think southernelite posted the requirements for the certain private schools were very, very minimal. Remember at these private schools some of the teachers do not have any educational degree or training and some do not have degrees in what they are teaching.

i understand that, but even with this, they often out-perform their public competition, so it's not really a point in my mind

quote:

Furthermore the private schools and charter institutions are given much more flexibility on the school and classroom level with regards to discipline, curriculum, methods, class size etc which is good, but also unfair when trying to adequately compare them to their public counterparts.

which shows that fewer rules = good, but the problem with this is that the LAE, AFT, etc push for these very rules

they cannot logically complain about the rules and then push for the rules to exist...unless the groups believe in the rules more than the acutal educations being given

it's not giving away free money. it's spending money that would already be spent on that student to a possibly better school for a possibly better education.

Not to mention it is saving the state a lot of money since MFP is lower for voucher students versus public school

quote:

Teachers unions don't give a shite about students. Union interest are in direct conflict with the student and parents in this case. They fight any effort to couple their interest with the interest of the student every step of the way.

Next time you see a special interest group (or what some would call teachers) taking sick days to complain about the state "not supporting our schools" on the Capitol steps in Baton Rouge, keep in mind that they are looking after their own arse and not the kids. "Support our schools" should be roughly translated to "support my continued lack of accountability and protect my defined benefits".

Well said!

re: Jindal's School Voucher Plan Ruled Unconstitutional

You still could have a student in a school for a period of time without the funding for that student.

But... this is ACROSS the board. A student can transfer from a public school to a charter school, so then the charter school is now paying for a student they didn't get funding for.

This argument is not valid nor does it help one side more than the other. This is everyone's shared problem, and a minimal one.

Also, i dont think BJ has a chance to get any more education reform type things passed in this state without extreme conflict. He has completely lost control of education system

His administration doesn't seem like the type to team up or consult with anyone.

Just note what happened to his tax plan that went to shite right out of the gate.

as opposed to a public school you don't like?

the voucher plan was unconstitutional, in many ways b/c our constitution is simply very shitty. the voucher plan was also not perfect (it should be open to all students)

but, the voucher program was an attempt to save some kids. it being spun into something else is ridiculous propaganda

I didn't know that you could stipulate where your tax money goes?

it's not just your tax money. if a student wants to go to better school, you want to stop them from using the same money that would go to a public school to the school of their choice?

This is nobody's fault but Bobby Jindal and his zealous staff.

Regardless of what you think about the legislation, they were told NUMEROUS times that they were acting in an unconstitutional manner. Some of his own party members apparently warned him about the likely fate of his bill.

Rather than address it correctly through the legislative process, he shoved it down the legislators throats and touted his major accomplishment.

Point being: He literally did not care from day 1 what ultimately happened to his legislation; He wanted the notch on his belt.

I hate unions, but I don't know that they are the true bad guys in this case.

I'd prefer my tax money going to good use, which is NOT the case if the kids are in a dysfunctional school system like the EBRPSB.

I'm hoping that the breakaway school district goes through, in part so that it can starve the EBRPSB so they can't do bull shite like moving 100 gifted and talented kids to a failing school in order to game the standardized tests and prevent a state takeover.

I think for most, it is the idea that it is not their money to stipulate where it goes.

Yes because my parents worked their arse off for me to be able to go to a great school as i will for my kids. I hate to punish the kids for their parents faults but damn.

I don't understand the difference unless you have a child attending one or the other. Even then...does it really matter? Your tax money is going to pay for some the schooling of some children. Rather they attend public or private school should be irrelevant .
