re: New Randy Rogers Band album "Trouble" FINALLY being released--Tuesday, 4/30

Not to go all David Fricke on y'all, but I just gave the full album a spin and here's the initial reaction...

Those who were saying the record would be a Nashville-style departure from start to end were wrong...I was in this bunch initially after hearing One More Sad Song and Fuzzy. These days, you need a tune or two to bring the masses (who aren't in touch with TX country music) into the conversation...those two tracks accomplish that for that crowd.

But the majority of the tracks are what I would call traditional RRB tunes:

Goodbye Lonely
Speak of the Devil
Flash Flood
If I Had Another Heart
Don't Deserve You
Had to Give That Up Too

Once again, there's a Waylon-style track (in the key of D again, just like Wicked Ways and Last Last Chance) with Shotgun. I like Shotgun a little better since the beat changes up and doesn't get too close to the boring side.

The title track duet with Willie isn't my favorite but adds some depth by dropping to the F#m in the chorus...a subtle change that makes it better

The last track, Never Got Around To That is another regret song that'll take me a few more spins to get used to...

Overall, the record finished a lot better that I was imagining it would...in my book, it sits just below Rollercoaster and Burning the Day (I'm REALLY partial to that record), on par with Just a Matter of Time, and I like it better than the self-titled release...(and Cheatham St. isn't in the vote since it was a different lineup)

Hoe y'all enjoy it as much as I will at the beach in a couple weeks

(ETA: The chord in Trouble is actually an A-flat minor, but I was thinking F#m with Capo 2)

Love the track with Willie, wasn't sure if I was listening to Mofro or RRB when I listened to it at first. Really impressed and happy that they didn't sell out

listening to it now

here is another review i found on Rhapsody

quote:

The Randy Rogers Band enlisted producer Jay Joyce to clean up their sound a tad, and with two singles on the charts, their decision paid off. Although their music is still firmly wrapped around ringing guitars and Rogers' gravelly vocals, Trouble does sound a bit brighter than past efforts. "Goodbye Lonely" is a heartland rocker that strikes gold with solid songwriting; the chiming guitars and Rogers' earnest twang are an added bonus. "Trouble Knows My Name" is a modern outlaw-meets-Ferris-Bueller song that features Willie Nelson. The two-step feel of "Flash Flood" is another highlight.

Very good CD. Flash Flood is my favorite. I like Willie's shoutout to New Orleans.

Mine too. Even better live, Brady plays the shite out of that fiddle.

Love this album. I was a little worried about how his hardcore fans would feel about it but it seems to be VERY well-received at this point. It's a different Randy--he just got married and he has a new baby on the way--and he's definitely at a different point in his music and in his life...and it shows. In the best way possible, though, I think.

Great review. I was a little skeptical about this one after hearing three songs from it and not liking any of them (the Willie song included). But with you & everyone else saying the majority of it is pretty classic RRB stuff, I'll give it a fair shot.

To back up what some have said in this thread, Burning The Day was a great album!

I've recently bought these albums:
RRB - Trouble
CDB - Standoff
Granger Smith - Dirt Road Driveway
Ryan Bingham - Tomorrowland

I've got a lot to keep me busy for a while

I'll tell you I have been following this band for 10 years now and alot of my favorite songs from them sound so much better acoustic. I wish one day they would be able to do a live acoustic album. To me even songs like one more sad song, fuzzy, and trouble knows my name at far and above better in there acoustic forms.
