when it comes to overall contribution to the world's music, who would you want to represent America?

It might be an unpopular decision here but I'll say The Beach Boys. IMO, they're our GOAT.

The Doors would follow behind them. Thoughts?

God I hope it's not country.

Blues or Metal? Glad I don't make this call.

The Beach Boys are indeed the quintessentially American band, if that's what you're asking

CCR and ABB are great, but the Beach Boys are America's band.

I know the bands above were way before my time just like the Beach Boys, but I've never really listened to them a whole lot, I've tried, just couldn't really get into it as much as the other 2. jmo

Agree about the Beach Boys if you're talking about actual rock bands and not pop singers or singer-songwriters.

In comparison to the others they're much more an American icon. The Ramones, in my mind, would be a distant second for the same reason.

I'd also include The Byrds in the CCR tier. They were just so far ahead of the curve in the mid to late 60s.

Of course, if you're talking about "musical contribution" in Rock & Roll that's where you have to start talking about a Chuck Berry and then Dylan.
