When did it become cool for kids to throw the baseballs back?

Watching sport center right now and they just showed highlights of 3 kids throwing balls back on to the field.

I think it is perfectly acceptable for a kid to keep a home run ball even if its hit by the opposing team.

Didn't see the third one but 2 of the kids appeared to be under 4 yrs old and they threw back a foul ball that was given to them by another fan. I think it was just spur of the moment type stuff by some very young fans, in fact the little boy got an earful from his older (9 or so) brother for getting rid of the ball.

I think it's dumb to throw a ball back. You know how many kids would treasure that ball? I was fortunate to get a ball when I was a kid and I still treasure it. Braves LF Dave Gallagher tossed it to me in the Astrodome in 94.
